Overview
We're working with a highly respected, employee-owned environmental and engineering consultancy that sits at the forefront of climate resilience in the rail sector. With a long-standing track record supporting major UK rail clients, they are now looking to appoint a Technical Director for their Rail Engineering team to play a key role in technical governance and project delivery as the business continues to grow.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced rail engineer who enjoys technical leadership, collaboration across disciplines, and contributing to resilient infrastructure solutions.
The Role
As a Technical Director, it will be your responsibility to lead the team in delivering rail structural projects for Network Rail directly and contractors whilst also being responsible for business development and growth of the team in Yorkshire which currently stands at 10.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading technical governance on rail engineering projects across multiple locations
Providing technical assurance and review of outline and detailed design outputs
Supporting project managers to identify and manage risk proactively
Coordinating multidisciplinary teams (Structures, Geotechnics, Environment, MEICA)
Acting as the primary technical interface with clients and contractors
Signing off design decisions, checking calculations, and approving deliverables
Bid preparation, fee proposals, and quotations
Mentoring and supervising junior engineers, with scope to build and lead a teamRequired Qualifications
Degree (or equivalent) in Civil and/or Structural Engineering
Chartered Member of a recognised professional body (e.g. ICE or IStructE)
Capability to be appointed as Contractor's Responsible Engineer (Designer) (prior experience in this role highly desirable)Essential Experience & Skills
Proven experience delivering railway civil engineering design within consultancy and/or contracting environments
Strong working knowledge of Network Rail standards, processes, and assurance requirements
Understanding of CDM Regulations
Competence in Eurocodes and British Standards
Experience producing, checking, and approving engineering calculations and drawings
Technical expertise in areas such as:
Reinforced concrete design
Geotechnical and retaining structures
Earthworks and embankment design
Culvert and buried structure design (e.g. BS 9295)
Experience reviewing and approving designs to Network Rail standards
