About the role
We are a very busy Emergency Department, treating on average 50,000 patients a year. We are looking for a Band 6 Sister / Charge Nurse to join our pro‑active and dynamic team.
Qualifications and experience
* Qualified registered Children’s Nurse with broad post‑registration experience at Band 5 or above in ED nursing or general paediatrics.
* Hold a mentorship qualification and child protection qualification or comparable experience.
* Demonstrate leadership skills and the ability to contribute effectively to team working in a busy and dynamic environment.
* Minimum 2 years post‑qualification experience in an urgent care setting is desirable.
Key responsibilities
* Assess and commence high‑impact interventions supported by PGDs while awaiting assessment by a paediatrician.
* Provide care, acting as a patient advocate to maintain safe and compassionate care of children and families within the ED.
* Assist matrons in supporting the nursing team in paediatric nursing care.
* Monitor standards of paediatric nursing care and take appropriate action to maintain and improve them.
* Respond to patients, relatives, and carers’ concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required.
* Provide ongoing referrals to community services for children and carers/parents when necessary.
* Assess, recognise, prioritise and evaluate children presenting with minor injuries or serious illness.
* Manage paediatric minor illnesses and minor injuries within scope of competency using PGD where available and seek clinical support from U&EC consultants, paediatric consultants or a senior paediatric doctor when required.
