Protocol Education are currently seeking a dedicated Autism Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEND school in the Peterlee area. The school supports pupils aged 2–19 with Education, Health and Care Plans, with many pupils having a primary diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) alongside additional learning or communication needs.
The school environment is designed to support pupils with autism through structured routines, clear communication strategies and sensory-aware learning spaces. Staff work closely together to create a calm and supportive environment where pupils feel safe and able to engage in learning.
As an Autism Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils in the classroom and during wider school activities, helping them develop communication skills, social interaction and independence.
The role may involve:
• Providing 1:1 and small group support for pupils with autism
• Supporting pupils with communication using visual timetables, symbols or alternative communication methods
• Helping pupils follow structured routines and transitions throughout the day
• Supporting pupils with sensory regulation and emotional wellbeing
• Encouraging positive social interaction and engagement with learning
The school is looking for candidates who are patient, understanding and able to provide consistent support for pupils with autism. Experience working with children or young people with SEND, or backgrounds in care or support work, would be highly beneficial.
Candidates should hold a valid DBS registered on the Update Service, or be willing to apply for a new DBS through Protocol Education if required.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
