Job Description

Are you an experienced Mechanical Engineer looking to make a real impact? Do you thrive in a collaborative, forward-thinking environment where innovation, sustainability, and digital transformation lead the way? The @one Alliance is a unique collaboration between Anglian Water and seven key partners: Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, MMB, MWH Treatment, Skanska, and SWECO. Together, we’re gearing up for AMP8—our most ambitious and innovative asset management period yet. From pioneering nature-based solutions to cutting-edge infrastructure, we are setting new benchmarks in sustainable water engineering.

As we grow, we’re building teams where people thrive, grow, and develop long-term careers.

What will you be doing as our new Senior Mechanical Engineer?

As our new Senior Mechanical Engineer, you’ll be at the forefront of designing and delivering innovative water solutions. You’ll lead technical delivery, drive sustainable and cost-effective design decisions, and guide junior engineers to deliver work that’s safe, future-proof, and built to last.

Key Responsibilities:

* Lead and review mechanical designs to ensure compliance, safety, and performance excellence.
* Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to high-quality standards.
* Promote the use of digital tools and modular construction techniques.
* Drive Health & Safety by design, identifying improvements and reducing whole-life costs.
* Champion sustainability, carbon reduction, and innovation across the design lifecycle.
* Mentor junior engineers and create a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
* Work closely with project and engineering leaders, contributing to strategic decisions.

What You’ll Bring:

* A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline).
* Preferably chartered, or working towards chartered status.
* Proven experience in mechanical design—ideally in the water sector or similar complex infrastructure environment.
* Strong understanding of industry standards, health and safety legislation, and construction principles.
* Leadership experience with a passion for coaching, mentoring, and developing others.
* Proficiency in CAD and engineering software.
* Confident decision-making skills, with a collaborative mindset and strong communication abilities.

About you:

We’re not just delivering capital projects—we’re helping to secure water for the future. When you join us, you’ll find:

* Real career progression in a supportive, people-first culture.
* A purpose-driven role in environmental sustainability.
* A flexible, inclusive working environment.
* Access to cutting-edge tools, technology, and training.
* Caring and investing in you.

Our values have been embedded at Barhale for over 40 years, guiding how we care and invest in people. As a Gold Investors in People company and a Sunday Times 100 Best Company to Work For, we are committed to investing in people.

We are passionate about creating a working environment where people are supported throughout their careers, enjoy security, and are part of a caring company. From the moment you join, your well-being and career aspirations will be supported through:

* Competitive salary

* 25 days of annual leave plus 8 public holidays and loyalty days
* 8 hours leave for volunteering
* Employee Assistance Programme

* Company car/green car scheme/car allowance/van (dependent on position)
* Leadership & management training and coaching
* Regular engagement and appraisal for career progression
* Development supported by training
