Join to apply for the Roman Catholic Chaplain role at Serco. Permanent, Part Time 10 hrs p/w (Monday & Tuesday – 5 hrs per day). £6,000 per annum + Excellent Corporate Benefits Package. Based at Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre female only accommodation, where we are responsible for all aspects of detainee safety, security and welfare provision, facilities management and catering.
What You’ll Do
As our Roman Catholic Chaplain, you will play a vital role in transforming lives within our diverse prison community. You will provide pastoral and spiritual care to prisoners and staff, offering sacramental provision for those within the Roman Catholic faith and pastoral care for all who seek it. You’ll engage with the wider faith community to support the resettlement journey of offenders and help them build a positive future. You’ll work as part of the Multi-Faith team to ensure every prisoner has the opportunity to practice their faith and participate in worship and meaningful activities aligned with their beliefs. You’ll also contribute to training and materials for staff and volunteers, and support the establishment in the absence of the Managing Chaplain.
* Act as Faith/Belief adviser, providing pastoral care and spiritual welfare to prisoners, staff and their families as requested.
* Plan and lead worship, meditation, prayer and faith/belief specific meetings; ensure chaplaincy care is available and accessible.
* Facilitate and deliver opportunities for worship, study and religious programmes; maintain facilities for worship and prayer in collaboration with other chaplains.
* Contribute to local policy, procedures and practice.
* Provide pastoral care to prisoners, support crisis situations, and mentor chaplains and volunteers.
* Nurture chaplaincy volunteers and coordinate services provided by contractors and volunteers.
* Ensure awareness of relevant religious events and coordinate establishment support; acquire and distribute faith literature and materials.
* Contribute to training programmes for staff and volunteers; assist in Faith Awareness Training.
* Support the establishment in the absence of the Managing Chaplain; assist in administration, data collection and achievement of targets.
* Assist in Probation APs and community work as agreed.
What You’ll Need To Do The Role
* Be an ordained Priest of the Roman Catholic Church with formal endorsement from the appropriate Diocesan Bishop or Religious Superior and agreement to work in a specific diocese.
* Or be an ordained Deacon, a Religious Brother/Sister or a qualified lay person with appropriate endorsement and agreement.
Essential Requirements
* Completed formally recognised theological formation (major seminary or equivalent for priests/deacons; Catholic Certificate in Religious Studies or equivalent for religious or lay persons).
* Formal agreement from the local Diocesan Bishop to minister in prisons within their Diocese.
* Endorsement from the HMPPS Roman Catholic Faith and Belief Adviser.
* Substantial experience of organising and leading religious services.
* Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills.
