Overview

We are seeking a Clinical Scientist who shares our vision to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients. You will join a dedicated, multi-professional team that places patients at the heart of the care we provide and supports scientific and clinical activity within our comprehensive service. The Nuclear Medicine Department, part of the Radiation Services group at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, delivers diagnostic imaging, in-vitro investigations and molecular radiotherapies (including I-131, Ra-223 and Lu-177 PSMA). We also provide scientific, technical and radiation protection advice to other NHS Trusts.

Main duties

You will participate in delivering the clinical nuclear medicine diagnostic and therapy service, providing scientific and technical support. After training, you will administer oral radionuclide therapies for patients with benign and malignant thyroid disease and support technologists/radiographers in delivering other therapies. You will work with the Lead Clinical Scientists and Lead Practitioner to develop SPECT/CT image processing and analysis protocols, including dosimetry for molecular radiotherapies. Under supervision of the MPEs, you will provide nuclear medicine physics support to other hospitals and travel as required.

Salary: £53,751 to £60,651 per annum, plus 15% High Cost Area Supplement


Job Description / Responsibilities

ENHT seeks to maintain and expand Mount Vernon Cancer Centre staff as we move to an exciting future. Person Specification

Essential Qualifications / Training

* Good (1st or 2nd Class) Honours degree in physics or engineering
* Postgraduate qualification (MSc) in a relevant branch of physics or medical physics
* State registration with the Health & Care Professions Council as a Clinical Scientist

Desirable

* Completion of Scientist Training Programme (STP) or equivalent
* Near-completion of training and registration may be considered for initial Band 6 until qualification

Experience

* Essential: Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Protection training and practical experience; experience with technical equipment and associated QA; computing related to Nuclear Medicine
* Desirable: SPECT/CT imaging; Nuclear Medicine therapy procedures; radiopharmacy or cell labelling

Knowledge

* Essential: Imaging and therapy techniques in nuclear medicine; radiation protection knowledge; understanding of legislation and guidelines
* Desirable: Radiopharmacy and in-vitro diagnostic tests; good clinical practice in research

Other Requirements

* Ability to plan and coordinate work across departments and hospitals; accurate measurements with specialised equipment; manual handling of equipment and patient handling as needed
* Flexibility to handle unpredictable work patterns and work in cancer diagnosis/treatment with anxious patients and relatives
* Teamwork and the ability to work independently when appropriate
* Ability to prepare radioactive materials safely and rapidly; awareness of hazards (ionising radiation, biohazards, solvents)

Skills

* Clear communication of complex information to patients and multidisciplinary staff; ability to present scientific information
* Analytical judgement and data interpretation; proficient with Excel/Word; high physical accuracy and manual dexterity for radiopharmaceutical dispensing
* Teaching, training and supervision capabilities; public speaking and presentation
* Ability to implement new procedures and adapt to changing requirements
* Prioritisation and flexible work management; ability to use and develop clinical applications software

Other

* Ability to act independently within professional guidelines and seek manager guidance as needed
