We are seeking Senior, Lead, and Principal Mechanical Design Engineers to join our specialist data centre engineering consultancy team. These roles involve developing robust, scalable, and energy‑efficient mechanical cooling solutions for hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data centre environments.
You will work closely with clients, multidisciplinary design teams, and mission‑critical stakeholders to ensure best‑in‑class mechanical design delivery across concept, developed, and detailed design stages.
Core Responsibilities (All Levels)
1. Develop mechanical designs for data centres including: Chilled water systems CRAH / CRAC systems Direct and indirect evaporative cooling Mechanical plant (chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers) DX cooling systems Ventilation & air distribution systems Pipework systems, pumps, and flow distribution
2. Produce designs, calculations, reports, schematics, specifications, P&IDs, and schedules.
3. Undertake cooling load calculations and energy modelling as appropriate.
4. Ensure compliance with: UK building regulations ASHRAE technical guidelines (incl. TC9.9) Uptime Institute Tier requirements Client technical standards
5. Participate in design reviews, HAZOPs, risk workshops, and value engineering sessions.
6. Support tender documentation, technical evaluations, and contractor design queries.
7. Coordinate with electrical, structural, architectural, and commissioning teams.
8. Ensure design quality, accuracy, and consistency across all outputs.
Role Requirements by Seniority Level
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Experience
9. 5-8 years mechanical design experience in building services or mission‑critical sectors.
10. Data centre experience preferred but strong experience in HVAC or industrial cooling also suitable.
Technical Competencies
11. Strong understanding of: Chilled water system design CRAC/CRAH units and airflow principles Cooling load estimation Pump selection and pipework sizing Heat rejection systems
12. Competent with software such as IES, Hevacomp, HAP (or equivalent).
13. Ability to produce design packages independently with review from Lead/Principal.
Soft Skills
14. Good communication and teamwork skills.
15. Capable of supporting client meetings.
16. Strong organisational ability and attention to detail.
Lead Mechanical Design Engineer
Experience
17. 8-12+ years experience in mechanical design.
18. Proven record leading mechanical design workstreams on large‑scale or hyperscale data centre projects.
19. Strong client‑facing experience managing design delivery.
Technical Competencies
20. Expertise in: Complex cooling system topology (N+1, 2N redundancy) High‑efficiency chilled water systems and free cooling solutions Airflow management (hot aisle/cold aisle containment) CFD review/interpretation (even if not a direct modeller) Energy optimisation and mechanical resilience strategy
21. Capable of technical checking/review for Senior and Junior Engineers.
Soft Skills
22. Excellent stakeholder engagement ability.
23. Effective communicator, able to lead Design Team and Client meetings.
24. Strong leadership skills in design coordination and decision‑making.
25. Ability to mentor less experienced engineers.
Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
Experience
26. 12-18+ years mechanical engineering experience with extensive data centre expertise.
27. Demonstrated leadership on multi‑disciplinary data centre programmes or hyperscale client accounts.
28. Ability to define mechanical design strategy and engage at an executive/strategic level with clients.
Technical Competencies
29. Recognised expert in: Large‑scale chilled water plant design & optimisation Next‑generation cooling technologies (liquid cooling, immersion cooling, rear door heat exchangers) Resilience modelling & redundancy strategies Energy modelling, PUE/Water Usage Effectiveness optimisation ASHRAE TC9.9 environmental compliance
30. Technical authority responsible for defining mechanical standards, templates, and QA processes.
Leadership & Strategic Responsibilities
31. Acts as Mechanical Technical Authority for the business.
32. Leads multidisciplinary teams and oversees whole‑project mechanical strategy.
33. Contributes to bids, frameworks, and client technical engagement at senior level.
34. Mentors and develops engineering teams across all levels.
35. Involved in resource planning, pipeline forecasting, and business growth strategy.
