Job Description

We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated Civil & Structural Engineering Apprentices to join our Bridges team in Newcastle .

As an apprentice, you’ll gain hands-on experience working on a wide range of projects, from concept design to implementation, for clients operating locally, nationally, and internationally. You’ll be part of a team that values technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration.

Our Bridges team leads the industry in delivering complex and impactful infrastructure. You may be involved in assessing and maintaining the UK’s bridge network or designing structural renewals for major transport hubs. We use cutting-edge technology and work closely with other disciplines across AECOM to deliver integrated, sustainable solutions.

Current and recent projects include:

1. CAFA Wessex

2. Thames Water pipe bridges

3. M40 DBFO

4. Various bridge assessment and inspection projects for local authorities

As an apprentice, you will:

5. Produce CAD (Computer-Aided Design) drawings

6. Support structural design and desktop publishing tasks

7. Assist with project administration and record-keeping

8. Review and analyse data

9. Contribute to problem-solving and design solutions

10. Participate in site visits to gather information or observe conditions

11. Work toward achieving Engineering Technician (EngTech) status, and later Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the ICE or IStructE

Qualifications

This role is ideal for school leavers (GCSE or A-Level) who can demonstrate the following:

12. Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade C/4 or above, including Mathematics and English

13. Three A-Levels (or equivalent such as BTEC Level 3 in Civil Engineering), including Maths and a physical science at grade C or above – required for Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship

14. Some experience or shadowing in an engineering environment (preferred)

15. Interest in software-based engineering and design (e.g., CAD, 3D modelling)

16. Passion for bridge structures and a desire to build a career in this field

17. Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development

18. Creative, practical, adaptable, and enthusiastic mindset

19. Strong attention to detail and methodical thinking

20. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
