Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Ophthalmic Nurse to join the ophthalmic department of the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will be a 1st Level Registered Nurse with a minimum of 2 years post-registration ophthalmology experience, providing clinical support to the ophthalmology department and contributing to transforming ophthalmology services in line with Royal College and national recommendations such as Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT).
The Eye clinic is open 0800hrs to 18:00hrs, Monday to Friday, subject to change with the ophthalmic service. The post holder must possess good communication skills, work well as part of a team, be flexible in approach, and respond appropriately to changing workload demands.
Main duties
* As an Ophthalmic Sister within the Department, take a key role in the management, co-ordination and development of Outpatients Ophthalmology Services and staff within the Trust.
* Manage quality, clinical care, patient experience, resources, and appropriate deployment of nursing staff.
* Provide specialist ophthalmology advice.
* Accept / direct emergency referrals from other healthcare professionals and medical staff.
* Take clinical histories and carry out examinations to make a differential diagnosis during autonomous nurse-led clinic sessions.
* Following training and assessment of competence, perform specialist ophthalmology procedures.
* Manage the department in the absence of the Department Manager.

Job Description
Job responsibilities include providing specialist ophthalmology advice, accepting direct emergency referrals from internal and external healthcare professionals, taking clinical histories and examinations, and performing specialist ophthalmology procedures after appropriate training. The post holder will support patient care, communicate effectively with the team, participate in protocol development, coordinate daily clinic allocation, ensure equipment competency, and lead service improvements in line with GIRFT and Trust policies. The role also involves resource management, data collection, and maintaining high standards of nursing care.
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential
* Registered Nurse
* Professional knowledge acquired through a degree or diploma in ophthalmology
* Active professional development of self and others
Knowledge and Experience
* Two years’ ophthalmology experience or related area with preceptor experience for qualified staff
* Experience at band 5 or above
* Demonstrable specialist ophthalmic knowledge
* Experience supervising learners and trained staff
* Clinical supervision experience
* Experience of audit/research
