Associate Technical Director – Ecology

Role description

As an Associate Ecologist, you will join a team of over 50 ecologists with more than 30 years of experience undertaking ecological surveys and assessments, and providing advice on soil, land use, hydrological and sustainable drainage issues, arboriculture, ecosystem service, natural capital assessment, biodiversity strategies, metrics and cultural heritage. We have delivered over 2,000 projects across the UK, Europe and beyond for public and private clients.

We are currently engaging on large projects including urban and green‑field residential development, highway and rail schemes, power stations, electrical and gas infrastructure, and more. Clients include EDF Energy, Welsh Government, Transport for Wales, Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, Natural Resources Wales, National Grid, Environment Agency, Transport for London, Highways England, Network Rail, the Canal and River Trust, housing associations and local authorities.

Your work could involve protected species, pollution, surface water and materials management, air quality or noise, in some of the world’s busiest and most beautiful locations.


Role accountabilities

* Lead and manage the delivery of projects meeting time, budget, and SHEQ targets, and manage the ecological aspects of client relationships to exceed expectations.
* Provide direction and technical advice, leading by example.
* Oversee project budgets, cashflow, attend meetings and support the Team Leader in day‑to‑day team management.
* Ensure technical quality and approval of project deliverables.
* Undertake ecological surveys, analyze results, and produce Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), impact assessments and biodiversity strategies.
* Provide advice on ecological issues at both depth in your specialty and breadth across related topics.
* Compile licence applications, develop mitigation and monitoring strategies.
* Supervise mitigation and monitoring of licensed work and liaise with statutory authorities.
* Manage performance of team members, deliver training at staff meetings and small groups.
* Design research projects and contribute to best practice development in training and survey standards.


Qualifications & Experience

* Excellent commercial and project management skills for projects of varying sizes.
* Detailed knowledge of ecological principles, biodiversity metrics, relevant legislation, policy and guidance.
* In‑depth knowledge of particular plant or animal groups and field survey skills.
* Proven track record of writing and delivering PEAs, BNG assessments, EcIAs and Ecology Chapters for Environmental Statements that have been consented.
* Proven track record of writing project and/or plan‑level Habitat Regulation Assessments (HRAs).
* Experience producing bids for a range of projects and interacting with clients.
* Leadership experience of a team.
* Hold survey and/or mitigation/conservation licences.
* Lead the design and compliance of biosecurity and health and safety protocols.
* Relevant degree and, ideally, a further education qualification.
* Chartered Environmentalist/Ecologist or demonstrably approaching Chartered Ecologist.
* Full member of CIEEM.
* Ability to travel when necessary.
