Mikeysline is a Highland, Islands and Moray based mental health awareness and suicide prevention charity, established in 2015. We support both adults and young people through our evening text-based services and on a 1:1 basis at our Hives. Mikeysline sessions are for anyone struggling with their mental health, experiencing emotional distress or thoughts of suicide. Sessions focus on the importance of a person-centred approach and providing a safe, confidential, non-judgemental space to talk.

We are now recruiting for a support worker role in Inverness Hive on a permanent basis. The support worker role is wide-ranging and will involve supporting adults and young people at our busy Hive in Inverness, open 6pm – 10pm seven days of the week.

Job Title & Shifts

Permanent Support Worker – based at Inverness Hive, Strothers Lane.

Minimum shift requirement of 3 shifts per week, to include a minimum of 2 weeknight shifts per week and two Fridays per month with on call element. There may be opportunities for involvement in additional shifts if desired or to cover annual leave/sickness. Weeknight shift pattern to be agreed following job offer.

Rate of Pay

£12.75 per hour + flat rate for on call.

Purpose of the Job

To work as part of a team to provide a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment for any young person or adult in need of mental health and emotional support.

To encourage young people and adults accessing the service to identify their own needs and make their own choices, supporting them to learn and use coping strategies.

To support young people and adults to recognise their own strengths, as well as how to use other resources.

To encourage young people and adults to identify and develop their own support networks.

Main Responsibilities of the Job

Support young people and adults to relieve emotional distress, mental health difficulties or active thoughts of suicide by providing empathy, supportive reassurance, and time for them.

To support young people and adults to improve their own physical and mental wellbeing.

To provide support to young people and adults in overcoming barriers to community inclusion.

To build effective communication with all individuals, partnership organisations and others.

To accept individual values, culture, religion, physical needs, gender and sexual orientation in compliance with equal opportunities policies.

To effectively manage risk and support positive risk taking when working with young people and adults.

To provide flexible support based on individual need and preferences, enabling individuals to make informed decisions and choices.

To treat all with courtesy, dignity and respect.

To uphold confidentiality and be fully aware of all confidentiality-related policies and procedures.

To be aware of, and implement, safeguarding policies and procedures

To maintain and develop professional links with all relevant external agencies, enabling effective signposting.

To attend relevant training and supervisions to develop own skills.

To record notes from support meetings appropriately using Mikeysline’s systems and ensure effective communication with other team members.

To carry out administration work, which could include but is not limited to, report writing, handling money, filing, telephone and computer work.

To take on other duties as considered commensurate to the post.

The Right Person for the Job (person specification)

Qualifications

Level 2 or 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care or equivalent is desirable. Experience of working in mental health, and an understanding and working knowledge of various mental health conditions, is essential. High standard in literacy, numeracy and IT skills is expected.

Current knowledge and understanding of challenges for young people and adults in emotional distress and or experiencing mental health issues.

Understanding of safeguarding issues and procedures, risk management, and health and safety.

Knowledge of current legislation including the Care Act, Mental Health Act and Equality and Diversity principles.

Knowledge of data protection and the importance of maintaining confidentiality at all times, including reporting information in accordance with policies and procedures

Skills & Experience (essential)

Current proven experience of working with young people and/or adults with mental health needs in a one-to-one setting.

Experience in providing information, guidance and support, with the ability to signpost individuals to appropriate organisations.

Ability to take proactive and solution-focused decisions quickly using own initiative.

Effective communication and active listening skills.

Organisational skills and accurate record keeping.

IT Skills.

Experience of partnership working and confidence in dealing with external agencies.

Flexibility and transport

Working in the mental health field requires flexibility and the hours of our services do vary. Candidates will need flexibility to attend training, shadow shifts and possible cover at other locations if suitable.

Personal attributes

Ability to deal with competing demands and multiple tasks. Self-awareness. Confidence in dealing with challenging situations. A highly skilled communicator, comfortable working with children, young people and adults.
