Description Job Title: Specialist, Part-Time Functional Skills Tutor (Chatham) Description: In this role, you will deliver English and/or Mathematics Functional Skills qualifications at Levels 1 and 2 to Royal Engineer Apprentices and other Pearson TQ learners. Based primarily at 1 RSME, Brompton Barracks, Chatham, with travel to other Pearson TQ or employer sites as required, this role aligns with market titles such as Functional Skills Tutor, English and Maths Tutor, Adult Skills Tutor, or Employability Skills Trainer. You’ll play a vital role in supporting learner achievement within a unique military training environment. The Role This role exists to support apprentices in developing the essential English and Maths skills they need to succeed in their apprenticeship and future careers. You’ll wake up motivated by helping learners build confidence, overcome barriers, and achieve nationally recognised qualifications. In your first six months, your biggest impact will be establishing strong learner engagement, delivering high-quality evening teaching sessions, and ensuring learners are progressing in line with agreed achievement plans. Working pattern: Teaching delivery: 18:00–20:00, Monday to Thursday Administrative tasks: During the working day or Friday evening What You’ll Own Success in this role means learners are engaged, progressing, and successfully achieving their Functional Skills qualifications. Your key priorities will include: Delivering English and/or Mathematics Functional Skills teaching at Levels 1 and 2 Managing a Functional Skills caseload to ensure timely learner completion Conducting initial, diagnostic, and Speaking & Listening assessments You’ll also lead and contribute to: Maintaining accurate learner records, including ILPs, e-portfolios, session records, and assessment evidence Preparing Tutor Rationales, Programme Plans, and Learning Session Records Booking examinations and coordinating invigilation Developing and maintaining lesson plans, schemes of work, and differentiated learning materials Providing Functional Skills performance data to support quality assurance and reporting Participating in team meetings, CPD, and mandatory training About You You’re a learner-focused tutor who brings energy, flexibility, and a commitment to high-quality delivery. You bring: A relevant teaching qualification (e.g. Cert Ed, PGCE, DTLLS or CTLLS) A minimum Level 2 qualification in English and Mathematics Experience delivering Functional Skills English and/or Mathematics up to Level 2 Experience delivering face-to-face learning using a range of methods and technology You’re someone who: Adapts delivery to meet individual learner needs through contextualised approaches Communicates clearly and builds strong rapport with learners Works confidently both independently and as part of a team Is flexible, organised, and enthusiastic Holds a full driving licence and access to a car (mileage allowance payable) What You’ll Get This role offers flexibility alongside the opportunity to make a real difference to learner outcomes.
