A well‑established engineering manufacturer is seeking a Machine Shop Shift Supervisor to oversee production activities within a busy, precision machining environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading shopfloor teams, achieving production and quality targets, and driving continuous improvement while maintaining high standards of safety and compliance.
This is a hands‑on supervisory role suited to an experienced manufacturing professional with strong leadership skills and a solid technical background.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, organise, and allocate work orders and labour to meet daily On‑Time Delivery (OTD) and productivity targets
Ensure production time is fully utilised and accurate timesheet completion is maintained
Oversee the manufacture of components in line with engineering drawings, route cards, and approved quality standards
Ensure standard working practices are followed, including workflow control, WIP levels, cycle times, and operating procedures
Continuously review existing production methods and implement efficiency improvements through approved processes
Monitor and manage departmental consumables and stock levels
Provide clear daily shift instructions and leadership to shopfloor operatives
Work closely with Engineering teams to support the introduction of new products and manufacturing processes
Liaise with Quality teams to ensure quality standards are understood and consistently achieved
Coordinate with Maintenance to manage breakdowns, planned maintenance, and work orders to minimise downtime
Develop technical capability across machinery and processes and support skills development within the team
Ensure 5S principles are embedded and maintained within the department
Maintain discipline and standards in line with company procedures
Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety and Environmental regulations
Carry out additional duties as required to support operational objectivesExperience & Qualifications
Essential
Previous supervisory experience within a manufacturing or engineering environment
Proven people management and leadership experience
Strong understanding of machine shop manufacturing processes
Experience working in unionised environmentsDesirable
Engineering or manufacturing apprenticeship
Leadership or management qualification
IOSH or equivalent Health & Safety certificationSkills & Attributes
Strong organisational and time management skills
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
Confident IT skills and experience with production systems
Ability to produce clear and accurate documentation
Proactive, self‑motivated, and solutions‑focused approach
Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines consistently
