The opportunity
Working with the Global Student Advisory Service, you will provide assistance to new international students from the time that they enrol, when they arrive in the UK and throughout the first months of their studies. You will answer queries, direct students to appropriate services, advise on UK and University processes and help students adjust to British culture and student life. You will provide support primarily to students commencing courses in September and January, with additional duties throughout the year where required.
What you’ll do
1. You will assist in setting up and delivering the international student Welcome Event, as well as other events throughout the year, organising students and answering student queries.
2. You will assist in welcoming students, giving them general advice about university life and Cardiff and answering their questions. Advice will include unfamiliar UK procedures such as opening bank accounts, registering with a doctor, finding accommodation, enrolment etc.
3. You will be responsible for signposting students and referring any complex/sensitive student issues to the Global Student Advisory Service.
4. You will take groups of international students on tours around campus. Students will be shown and given information about the buildings and facilities on campus including ICT/learning facilities, Students Union, Student Services, Global Lounge, I-Zone, schools and Sports facilities etc.
5. You will respond to urgent calls for assistance from the Global Student Advisory Service.
What we are looking for
6. Knowledge of international cultures and religions and an understanding of issues facing international students studying in the UK.
7. Excellent knowledge of Cardiff Metropolitan University facilities and have the ability to clearly promote and describe them to students in a positive manner.
8. Knowledge of Cardiff, its transport systems and services available to students, as well as knowledge of UK Higher education procedures e.g. enrolment.
9. An understanding of equality and diversity issues.
10. Effective verbal and written communication skills and an ability to provide constructive feedback.
11. Excellent time management and organisational skills and an ability to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team.
12. The ability to support and communicate with people of varying backgrounds in a friendly and patient manner and can enthuse and motivate others.
13. The ability to contribute to group presentations where necessary and lead small groups in activities.
14. Ability to act as a responsible member of the Global Student Advisory Service and be a positive role model for international students.
15. A commitment to improving cultural awareness at the university and to equal opportunities.
