Job overview

The Retail Coordinator will be key in supporting the hospital’s catering retail outlets. Working collaboratively with the Retail Manager and Catering Manager, the coordinator will ensure the delivery of high-quality, efficient, and customer-focused retail services.

Please be aware that this role is not currently eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants should be aware of the requirement to independently obtain ongoing right to work in the UK beyond the expiry of any temporary or time-limited permissions. Evidence of this will need to be shared with the HR Team to ensure our records remain up to date.


Main duties of the job

Assist in executing the commercial strategy, aligning operations with Trust objectives and performance targets to drive revenue and service quality.

Support with all retail functions, including events management and function catering within the trust

Ensure full compliance with food safety regulations, managing allergens, dietary needs, religious considerations, and modified texture requirements across all retail services.

Adhere rigorously to HACCP protocols and due diligence procedures to uphold health and safety standards for patients, staff, and visitors.

Provide guidance and mentorship to junior and new staff, promote a positive team culture, and support the professional development of catering assistants to enhance service delivery and kitchen efficiency.

Oversee stock control processes, contribute to product selection and mix, and support pricing strategies to optimise performance and reduce waste.

Respond effectively to operational challenges such as dietary changes, equipment issues, or urgent menu adjustments to ensure continuity of service and customer satisfaction.

Assist line managers in conducting staff appraisals for junior team members, contributing to performance reviews and development planning

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

* Diploma Qualification in retail management or equivalent experience (minimum 3 years’ experience in NHS catering retail manager or previous role)
* Customer Service Trained
* Health & Safety Trained


KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

* Experience working in a food retail or hospitality environment, with a strong focus on delivering excellent customer service in a fast-paced setting.
* Understanding food safety regulations and standards (e.g., Food Hygiene Certificate Level 2 or equivalent), including allergen management and safe handling of food and beverages.
* Proven ability to manage stock control processes efficiently, including ordering, storage, and minimising waste, while ensuring product availability
* Experience supporting commercial targets, including sales growth, profit margin improvement, and cost control within a retail or catering context.
* Experience supervising or supporting junior team members, including training, mentoring, and assisting with appraisals or performance management.
* Competence with retail technology such as point of sale (POS) systems, electronic stock ordering, and basic data reporting tools.
* Previous experience working within a healthcare, educational, or large institutional setting is an advantage, as it demonstrates awareness of the unique operational requirements in such environments.


SKILLS & ABILITIES

* Strong ability to engage with customers professionally and courteously, responding promptly to inquiries, special requests, and feedback to enhance the retail experience.
* Skilled in managing daily retail activities, including stock replenishment, merchandising, pricing, and ensuring consistent product presentation.
* Able to prioritise and manage multiple tasks efficiently during busy periods, ensuring smooth service flow and timely completion of duties.
* Thorough knowledge of food safety standards, including allergen management and hygiene practices, ensuring retail areas meet regulatory requirements.
* Strong interpersonal skills to communicate clearly with team members, line managers, suppliers, and customers, fostering a positive and cooperative work environment.
* Ability to quickly identify and resolve operational challenges such as stock shortages, equipment faults, or customer concerns with practical solutions
* Demonstrated capability to work collaboratively within a team, supporting colleagues and contributing to a positive workplace culture.
