Overview

The Environment Agency has a broad, varied remit to protect and enhance the environment, with a goal to create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for people and wildlife. Water is at the heart of all we do. Clean and available water is essential as it becomes an increasingly scarce resource, and we need to protect it. Water companies must invest to protect the environment from pollution, and we need your knowledge and experience to help advise water companies on their plans and hold them to account for protecting the water environment.

Responsibilities

* Work alongside Water Quality Officers to establish and embed Bathing Waters work within the team and support the Operational Community of Practice to fulfill its responsibilities.
* Assess Water Company proposals to meet bathing water standards and develop innovative methods to achieve these standards.
* Collaborate with Environment Agency teams (e.g., Local Area Integrated Environmental Planning, National Water Quality Guidance Teams) and engage with water companies and other external stakeholders to achieve Bathing Waters outcomes.
* Respond to incidents as part of an incident role, with training provided; availability for incident response or business continuity support may attract additional payment.
* Be part of a dispersed team and travel for national meetings with occasional overnight stays; training and mentoring support will be provided.


Team and Location

Operations Catchment Services works to secure outcomes across key stakeholders, influencing significant investment in the water environment. This post is part of the OCS Water Quality team. The team is dispersed and flexible on location, with opportunities for face-to-face meetings as needed.


Essential qualifications and experience

* Knowledge of water quality planning, bathing water regulations, understanding of the water industry and price review processes; excellent communication and networking skills with both Environment Agency colleagues and external stakeholders.
* Ability to analyse technical information.
* Experience presenting technical information to diverse audiences.
* Organisational skills to plan, track, deliver and evaluate work to meet standards and timescales.
* Experience in an environmental discipline (e.g., water companies, environmental consultancies, regulatory roles, research and education, environmental charities).


Desirable qualifications

* Degree or postgraduate qualification in an environmental discipline (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Geography, Ecology, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Data Science and analytics).
* Experience in water quality modelling.

You will be working as part of a dispersed team and may be required to travel for national meetings with occasional overnight stays.
