Role: Robotics Algorithms Engineer

About AssetCool

AssetCool is addressing one of the most pressing challenges in the global energy transition - grid congestion. By combining cutting-edge grid robotics with breakthrough materials science, our technology transforms the physical performance of the grid in situ, increasing current-carrying capacity by up to 30%, at just 5% of the cost and in a tenth of the time compared to conventional approaches.

In addition to enhancing capacity, our solutions tackle other grid constraints including corrosion, electrical noise, and enable the collection of high-value data to build accurate, predictive digital twins. This technology is proving transformative and is being adopted at an accelerating pace, with deployments across Canada, Slovenia, the UK, and the USA, and a strong global deployment pipeline.

AssetCool is one of the fastest growing start-ups in Europe, with plans to more than double, again, in size over the next six months. Backed by international investors from the US, Europe, and the UK, we are proud to be one of the most innovation-focused companies in the UK energy sector.

We’re looking for ambitious, mission-driven individuals who are excited to work hard alongside their colleagues to build and deploy world-leading technology that tackles some of the planet’s most urgent infrastructure challenges.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Robotics Algorithms Engineer (Perception, Sensor Fusion & Autonomy) to design, develop, and help validate the algorithms that power our next generation of autonomous robotic systems.

This is a hands-on, applied engineering role focused on real-world robotics – developing and deploying perception, sensor fusion, and autonomy algorithms on operational robotic platforms. You’ll work across the full development lifecycle, from early prototyping through to robust implementation, field testing, and iteration in challenging outdoor environments.

You will collaborate closely with software engineers, mechatronics engineers, and embedded engineers to deliver algorithms that are measurable, testable, and deployable on real hardware – balancing performance, compute constraints, and robustness.

Key Responsibilities

You will contribute to the development of core autonomy systems, including:

* Design and develop prototype and production-ready perception pipelines, including detection, segmentation, tracking, registration, and scene understanding.
* Work with a wide range of sensors and modalities, such as: RGB cameras; thermal cameras; LiDAR; depth cameras; IMUs; GNSS; RTK; environmental sensors; pressure sensors, ensuring robust operation across varying environments and signal quality.
* Develop inspection and QA capabilities to validate coating application results, including coverage estimation, defect detection, and quantitative metrics for field verification and reporting.
* Develop 3D perception and reconstruction algorithms, including (but not restricted to) Structure-from-Motion (SfM), multi-view reconstruction/visualisation, depth fusion, and dense/sparse mapping pipelines.
* Design and implement motion/pose estimation and tracking techniques (e.g. Visual Inertial Odometry), supporting accurate localisation under challenging real-world conditions.
* Design and prototype autonomous behaviours and control systems that use fused state estimates, perception outputs, and environmental models to operate reliably in real-world conditions.
* Perform algorithm design and analysis to balance trade-offs between accuracy, latency, and reliability.
* Collaborate with software engineers to integrate algorithms into production systems (C++/Python services, edge inference pipelines, robotics middleware).
* Communicate clearly through short technical write-ups, design notes, sprint demos, and experiment logs.
* Contribute to engineering best practice (clean code, Git workflows, reproducible testing, documentation).

Required Skills & Experience

* Strong proficiency in Python and/or C++ for algorithm developing and interfacing with sensing hardware.
* Experience using Linux as a development environment.
* Solid foundations in core perception concepts, including:
* segmentation, classification, registration, object detection, tracking, pattern recognition
* Hands-on experience implementing Kalman filtering (or related state estimation techniques) and applying them to real sensor data.
* Experience in working with visual sensors (RGB cameras; depth cameras; LiDAR).
* Experience designing and implementing sensor fusion systems involving multiple modalities.
* Experience designing and implementing autonomous robotic control systems.
* Ability to work in conjunction with systems programmers across the full development and test lifecycle (prototype → integration → validation).

Why Join AssetCool?

* Work on groundbreaking technology revolutionizing the power grid.
* Fast-growing startup with significant industry traction and large-scale projects.
* Collaborative, innovation-driven team with exciting career growth opportunities.
* Competitive salary, and flexible work options
