Babcock Submarine Support Engineering’s (SSE) mission is to deliver submarine programme and engineering excellence through enterprise collaboration, innovation, and analytics. Within Babcock SSE, the Constructive Group support the Royal Navy Submarine Fleet through the Structures, Naval Architecture, Seamanship and Outfitting and Design Change disciplines.
The role
As a Structures Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This role is highly rewarding with visible contributions to the defence capability of the UK, helping to keep the Royal Navy at sea and fighting fit.
This role will allow the successful candidate to work on a wide range of projects on complex assets.
1. Structural assessment using hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis.
2. Design and assessment for explosive shock survivability.
3. Platform surveys and validation exercises.
4. Generation of capability upgrades.
5. Technical investigations and feasibility studies.
6. Trials and testing.
7. Management and assessment of structural defects.
8. Structural safety certification; and
9. Support to future platform projects.
This role is full time OR part time, 36 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with days in the office and days working from home.
Essential experience of the Structures Engineer
10. Experience of marine structures and submarines is not a requirement, as the right candidate will be given the support and means to learn within a fast paced and challenging engineering environment.
11. This role will suit candidates with a background in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths; looking for a change in direction and a strong desire to develop themselves, as well as people with existing experience within the defence engineering sector.
Qualifications for the Structures Engineer
12. Degree qualified in a STEM discipline (or equivalent experience).
13. Experience in finite element analysis software such as Ansys,

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).
