SEMH Teaching Assistant – EN3

Teaching Personnel are recruiting committed and resilient Teaching Assistants to support pupils with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs in schools across the EN3 area. This role is particularly suited to individuals who are confident working with challenging behaviour and are motivated to help pupils overcome barriers to learning through consistent, positive support. Both full time and part time opportunities are available, with daily rates of £90–£110, paid weekly .

Schools in EN3 often support pupils who require higher levels of pastoral and behavioural input. These settings place strong emphasis on relationship building, structure, and emotional regulation. As a Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in helping pupils feel safe, understood, and ready to engage in education, working closely with teachers, SENCOs, and pastoral teams.

In this role, you will support pupils who may display challenging behaviour linked to unmet emotional needs, trauma, or difficulties with regulation. You will help to de-escalate situations, model positive behaviour, and provide consistent boundaries. Support may be delivered on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, both inside the classroom and in specialist support areas, with a focus on keeping pupils engaged and learning.

You will be involved in implementing behaviour support plans, using restorative approaches, and reinforcing positive choices. Patience, resilience, and emotional intelligence are essential, as progress may be gradual but highly rewarding. Building trust and rapport with pupils will be central to your day-to-day work, helping them develop coping strategies, confidence, and improved social skills .

Applicants should be calm under pressure, adaptable, and confident managing behaviour in a professional and supportive manner. Experience working with SEMH, challenging behaviour, care settings, youth work, mentoring, or similar roles is highly desirable, though not essential for the right candidate with the right attitude.

Applicants must have the right to work in the UK and hold a Child Only DBS on the Update Service, or be willing to apply for one through Teaching Personnel. Satisfactory references covering the last three years of employment will be required.

Teaching Personnel offer competitive weekly pay, access to free SEMH-focused training and professional development, free DBS checks (subject to a qualifying period), and ongoing support from a dedicated consultant who understands the demands of SEMH roles. You will have the opportunity to work in schools that value consistency, resilience, and strong staff support .

If you are passionate about supporting pupils with SEMH needs and feel confident working with challenging behaviour in the EN3 area, please submit your CV to joseph.banks-hepworth@teachingpersonnel.com

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
