FTE: 1 (35 hours/week)

Closing date: 28/04/2025

The Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean and Marine Engineering (NAOME) is seeking to appoint a workshop supervisor to work within an established technical support team, delivering technical assistance and expertise to undergraduate and research projects within the department. The main duties of the post will be to produce machined parts from engineering drawings to a high level of accuracy using all standard engineering workshop machinery (lathes, milling machines, and CNC equipment). Ensure that any other users of the workshop are working safely whilst ensuring work is completed in relevant time frames. Take on the lead with safety completing and reviewing risk assessments and COSHH. Experience of materials testing would be an advantage (fatigue testing and machining of samples). The postholder will also support the research and consultancy work of the laboratory by demonstrating workshop techniques alongside providing support and advice on student projects. Liaise with students, academics, and other end users on the most effective means of test specimen production, test rig construction, and general equipment maintenance.

To be considered for this role you will be educated to a minimum of HNC level in Mechanical Engineering or have significant relevant work experience. You will have knowledge and expertise in an engineering workshop environment, as well as demonstrable working knowledge of health and safety regulations and procedures. You should be competent in the operation of all standard workshop machinery to a high level of accuracy and be able to interpret engineering drawings. A recognised apprenticeship is a must. You will have good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to inform and explain technical elements to stakeholders with a varying degree of technical knowledge. You will have trouble-shooting skills, including a methodical approach to solving problems with limited guidance. In addition, you will have an ability to work autonomously with minimum supervision in order to meet project deadlines and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. A strong customer focus is essential.

The postholder will be a confident communicator and have wide experience of many technical engineering disciplines e.g., fitting skills, material properties, and manual handling. Aspects of the role may include lifting/carrying, cleaning, and may involve exposure to chemicals, heat, dust, or detergents.

It is anticipated that formal interviews for this post will be held on Tuesday, 13 May 2014.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Steven Black, Chief Technician (S.black@strath.ac.uk).
