Higher Level Pharmacy Technician – Procurement & Dispensary Services
Provide cost‑effective procurement of pharmaceuticals and related items for hospital pharmacies and outlying teams within the Trust.
Work with clinical pharmacists, dispensary managers and medicines management pharmacy technicians to develop and provide a comprehensive Medicines Optimisation Service to wards and clinics.
Responsibilities include:
* Manage and organise daily ordering of medicines from wholesalers to all stock‑holding sites, adhering to local policy, reorder levels and national contracts.
* Maintain stock control, including ordering, receiving goods, updating the ordering files in Ascribe and ensuring correct contract details.
* Support the provision of pharmacy activity reports on medicines cost and usage as per the monthly schedule or upon request.
* Analyse prescribing trends and identify cost‑saving opportunities using Define, Exend and Exend Plus.
* Process off‑contract claims, act on medicine recalls and shortages, and update the Medicine Optimisation database.
* Aid the review, implementation and updating of SOPs within the Pharmacy Team and propose changes to practices and procedures, especially in procurement.
* Ensure compliance with controlled drug regulations and maintain the security of drug stock, prescriptions and confidential information.
* Provide information and counselling to staff and patients regarding medication, EPMA system use and drug availability.
* Collaborate with wholesalers, suppliers and senior pharmacy staff to resolve supply issues, invoice queries and credit claims.
Additional duties:
* Attend procurement meetings including the West Midlands Pharmacy Procurement Sub‑group.
* Support ward teams with drug shortages management and medicines reconciliation at admission and discharge.
* Participate in the Medicines Management Audit programme and report incidents via the Trust Incident Reporting System.
Required knowledge and skills include:
* Strong understanding of pharmacy procurement processes and supply chain management.
* Experience with electronic prescribing and inventory systems such as Ascribe and EPMA.
* Ability to analyse data and prepare cost reports.
* Effective communication skills and the ability to liaise with clinical and non‑clinical staff.
