King Edward’s School are looking for an outstanding, experienced and engaging Teacher/Performer to join their growing and extremely vibrant Music Department from September 2025. Candidates should be capable of teaching piano to individual pupils aged from 7 to 18 in a wide variety of styles – Classical, Popular and Jazz. This would range from beginner to Diploma standard, preparing pupils for ABRSM & Trinity face-to-face and online examinations, concerts, masterclasses, assemblies and other performances.
Whilst not yet having final confirmation of all new piano lesson starters in September, it is currently estimated that the successful candidate will initially teach somewhere between 9 and 11 hours per week from the start of the Autumn Term. The recruitment of new pianists will be actively encouraged through piano demonstrations, assemblies and incentives through which, it is expected, that the number of teaching hours will grow.
Job Description
Job Title: SMS Teacher – Piano
Employment Status: Fixed-term, part-time from January to June
Individual Lessons: £40.53 per hour of teaching, including holiday pay.
Ensemble Teaching: Paid at the current teaching Scale KES 7 (£48,914 pro-rata). This rate recognizes your contribution to the School, including participation in concerts and events.
Overtime Payments: Work requested by the Director of Music will be paid at the hourly pupil-lesson rate.

Reporting and Responsibilities
Reporting to: The Director of Music.
Responsible for: Delivering outstanding one-to-one Piano tuition to pupils aged 7-18, supporting their performances, exams, and competitions. Reporting progress to the School and parents, maintaining professional communication and administrative procedures.
Main Responsibilities
1. Delivering high-quality 30-minute lessons weekly to pupils from beginners to Grade 8, diploma levels, and beyond.
2. Tailoring lessons to individual pupil standards, interests, and requirements.
3. Preparing pupils for performances, masterclasses, competitions, and auditions.
4. Preparing pupils for ABRSM and Trinity exams (Grades 1-8+).
5. Supporting and promoting Music and the Department’s aims within the School.
6. Encouraging participation in extra-curricular music activities.
7. Participating in performances at concerts, services, and recitals as directed.
8. Communicating professionally with parents, pupils, and staff.
9. Providing feedback on pupils’ progress and completing reports via SIMS.
10. Advising parents on music and instrument purchases.
11. Inspiring a lifelong love of Music.
12. Maintaining lesson timetables and recording pupil attendance.
13. Being aware of pupils' SEND and pastoral needs.
14. Responding to school emails regularly.
15. Building positive relationships with parents and pupils.
16. Contributing to the extra-curricular Music programme.
17. Attending team meetings as directed.
Other duties may be assigned as needed, with a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances.
