* Duration: 3 year Fixed Term contract
* Remuneration: $113,911 base, plus 17% superannuation and leave loading

Details of the role

The Post-doctoral fellow is part of a dynamic team focused on developing novel anti-angiogenic and antifibrotic therapies for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), led by Dr Daisy Shu in the UNSW Retinal Research Group. The project investigates the therapeutic potential of emerging drug candidates for AMD and the use of innovative nanoparticle-based delivery systems.

The Post-doctoral fellow will play a central role in executing the research plan, from in vitro mechanistic studies to in vivo disease models, with the goal of identifying and validating new drug candidates that can transform AMD management and reduce the treatment burden of intravitreal injections.


Key Skills / Responsibilities

* A PhD in biomedical sciences, optometry, vision science, ophthalmology, pharmacology, or a related discipline.
* Conduct high-quality wet laboratory research:
o Test novel therapeutic candidates using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo experimental models.
o Perform assays to evaluate key disease processes, including cell migration, tissue remodelling, and molecular marker analysis.
o Collaborate with interdisciplinary collaborators to develop and assess advanced drug delivery approaches.
* Prepare, analyse, and interpret experimental data, ensuring reproducibility and rigour.
* Prepare and submit animal and human ethics applications as required.
* Disseminate findings through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and project reports to BrightFocus Foundation.
* Contribute to supervision and training of honours and HDR students within the group, as required.
* Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary collaborators (chemistry, engineering, ophthalmology) to deliver project milestones.
* Demonstrated expertise in in vivo mouse models, with preference for experience in ocular models (e.g. laser-induced choroidal neovascularisation).
* Strong technical skills in cell culture, microscopy, molecular biology, and immunohistochemistry.
* Evidence of high-quality research output, relative to opportunity, including publications and conference presentations.
