Role Purpose To support the Head of Health, Safety and Wellbeing for Area East in the management and delivery of Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) across major infrastructure construction activities. The role includes implementation and continual improvement of the Health & Safety Management System (HSMS), ensuring compliance with OHSAS 18001:2007 (or ISO 45001 where applicable), statutory requirements, and project-specific Works Information. This position plays a key role in establishing, maintaining, and where possible, raising industry-leading Health & Safety standards. The role may involve managing one or more direct reports. Flexible working arrangements may be considered, including part-time, remote working, or compressed hours. Key Responsibilities Support and manage the implementation of the Health, Safety and Wellbeing Strategy across Area East. Ensure Health & Safety policies, procedures and statutory requirements are fully understood and implemented across operations. Provide operational and functional management with expert advice on practical implementation of H&S policies and processes, including liaison with external stakeholders where required. Support Contract Management in understanding stakeholder aims, priorities and risks relating to H&S. Assist in the development, coordination and review of Health & Safety Management Plans. Provide advice and guidance on the prevention of accidents, incidents and occupational ill health. Support the development, implementation and monitoring of the Health & Safety Management System. Assist in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with regulators, local authorities and other external stakeholders as required. Develop and manage programmes of Health & Safety inspections and surveillance across operational sites. Participate in internal and parent company audits as required. Provide independent advice regarding assessment and appointment of subcontractors. Assist in preparing risk assessments and safe systems of work where necessary. Monitor, analyse and report Health & Safety performance data, identifying trends and areas for improvement. Support and/or lead investigations into accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences and near misses. Assist in the preparation and delivery of Health & Safety training and briefings. Promote and capture best practice, ensuring continuous improvement across the business. Set high standards and lead by example in Health & Safety leadership. Liaise effectively with members of the HSW team and wider project teams. Maintain professional competence through continued professional development and relevant qualifications/memberships. Obtain required competency cards in line with company compliance standards. Understand and implement environmental and sustainability policies and statutory requirements relevant to operations. Required Qualifications, Skills & Experience Essential Minimum five years' experience in Construction / Infrastructure Health & Safety. Safety, Health and Environmental Diploma, Degree, NCRQ or NVQ (or equivalent). Working towards Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH). Strong collaborative behaviours and ability to influence at all levels. Desirable Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 5 qualification. Training qualifications (e.g., Train the Trainer, internal auditor, etc.). About the Role This role supports delivery of a major civil engineering and tunnelling project in West Ruislip. Works include complex underground construction, shafts, structural works, utilities diversions, earthworks and associated infrastructure activities.
