Working on a major infrastructure programme at one of the world's busiest aviation hubs, this role sits within a critical asset management and compliance framework delivering essential upgrades to key tunnel infrastructure. The project requires works to be delivered within tight possession windows while maintaining full operational functionality of the airport's transport network.
Purpose of the Role
The Backshift Night Engineer is responsible for overseeing and delivering works during restricted night-shift possession windows. You will ensure all planned activities are executed safely, efficiently, and in line with design specifications, acting as the key link between day-shift planning and on-site night-time delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Delivery
Supervise and deliver all on-site engineering activities during night shifts
Ensure works are carried out in accordance with design specifications and required standards
Provide real-time engineering solutions to challenges arising during installation
Operational Management
Oversee subcontractors and site teams to ensure efficient delivery within limited shift durations
Drive productivity while maintaining high standards of quality and safety
Shift Coordination
Receive detailed handovers from the day team and ensure full understanding of planned works
Ensure all labour, plant, materials, and permits are in place prior to shift commencement
Deliver works within tight tunnel closure windows (typically 4-5 hours)
Health, Safety & Compliance
Implement and adhere to approved RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements)
Ensure all site activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations
Progress Monitoring & Reporting
Track and report progress against nightly work plans
Identify and escalate any risks, delays, or issues impacting programme delivery
Stakeholder Coordination
Liaise with site management, control teams, and key stakeholders during shifts
Support a collaborative approach to ensure smooth delivery across all interfaces
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Essential
Strong background in Civil or Structural Engineering
Experience delivering works on major infrastructure projects (e.g. tunnels, highways, rail)
Ability to interpret engineering drawings and deliver works in live operational environments
Strong organisational and communication skills
Desirable
Experience working within aviation or highly regulated environments
Valid CSCS card and relevant H&S qualifications (e.g. SMSTS)
Familiarity with NEC4 contracts and associated processes
