Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated person to work as part of the team running our busy Bereavement Office at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital. You will be a key contact for the bereaved, ward staff and for Doctors to facilitate the completion of the Medical Cause of Death Certificate and/or Cremation certificate.

A intergral role and part of the Bereavement Team at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, manged by the Head of Clinical Site Management, working alongside Chapliancy, Funeral Directors and Doctors providing support to the bereaved families and Registrar of Deaths/Coroners’ Officer.

you will support this team and site operations to ensure challenges are given responsive attention team to effective and timely completion of death paperwork and review by a Medical Examiner.ensure engaging with both our internal and external stakeholders

Main duties of the job

This role is vital in “You” will deal with enquiries from bereaved next of kin, medical staff and all range of clinical and administrative staff both on telephone and face to face in relation to the Medical Certificate Cause of Death (MCCD). The post holder will be required to give support and guidance to friends and relatives of deceased patients and carrying out administrative procedures required to a very high standard within this role.

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. Good basic Education to GCSE or equivalent level

Skills / Abilities

Essential criteria

2. Proficient in using IT
3. Able to communicate effectively and compassionately with a wide range of service users and families of deceased patients
4. Able to demonstrate understanding of the cultural needs of the diverse communities who attend and use St. Bartholomew’s Hospital
5. Able to demonstrate calmness, empathy towards recently bereaved families and able to manage upsetting and stressful situations with pride and dignity.
6. Ability to prioritise competing demands on time

Desirable criteria

7. Experience of Cerner Millennium, Microsoft office including Excel
8. Level 1or 2 Medical Terminology (AMSPAR)

Experience

Essential criteria

9. Previous experience in Inpatient or Outpatient environment.
10. NVQ level 2 in customer service or demonstrable previous experience of working in a customer focused or service area
11. A commitment to a high standard of service and attention to detail

Desirable criteria

12. Previous experience as a qualified Anatomical Pathology Technician (APT) working in either a Mortuary or Deceased Patient Holding Unit (DPHU)
13. Previous experience of the Patient Affairs/Bereavement processv
14. Previous experience of preparation of Medical Certificate for Cause of Death (MCCD)

Knowledge

Essential criteria

15. Ability to explain both the Medical Examiner, Coroners and MCCD process to doctors

Desirable criteria

16. Knowledge of end of life care
