Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent Ward Manager position on Morris Ward, a 15-bedded male Low Secure Forensic Unit (LSU). This specialist ward supports User of service who present a high risk to themselves and/or others, and is proudly registered with the Quality Forensic Mental Health Network.

You will join a dedicated multi-disciplinary team committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. You will play a pivotal role in leading the team, ensuring clinical excellence, and fostering a therapeutic environment that promotes recovery and rehabilitation.

We focus on rehabilitation, risk management and recovery, helping patients regain independence and transition to a brighter future. With a dedicated team of professionals, we offer personalised, treatment plans, therapeutic interventions on this secure empowering unit.

Morris ward is a low secure inpatient service which cares for patients detained under the mental health act who requires care and treatment, under conditions of low security due to the nature of the risk they pose to themselves and others.

This includes histories of aggression, absconding, criminal offences, severe and intractable clinical symptoms, serious drug alcohol misuse.

We are looking for candidates who have enthusiasm and passion for meeting the needs of acutely unwell adults with Mental Health problems, as well as being adaptable, enjoy variety, can work independently, as well as understanding the relevance of team working.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for line managing in-patient staff.

To ensure that the Trust physical health policy is implemented.

To ensure that issues relating to clinical risk are identified and there are SMART care plans and risk management plans for each patient.

To actively promote service user and carer involvement and by responding constructively to comments, suggestions, complaints, and compliments.

To ensure that interventions on the ward are evidence based and carry out various audits.

To carry out supervision, appraisals and performance reviews in line with the knowledge and skills Framework.

To participate in the Directorate Quality and Safety and Inpatient Experience Group meetings to develop practice and to provide support to ward staff.

To work closely with support services the Practice Improvement Practitioners, HR, Finance and infection control department in ensuring that trust policies are adhered to.

To undertake assessment of client’s needs and support the MDT in formulating appropriate individual care plans, taking a holistic approach.

To complete 5 days of Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression course which is yearly updated and implement in practice as required.

Deputise in the absence of the Modern Matron.

Ensure that relatives and carers of service users and feel supported and are able to communicate effectively with the clinical team.

Take steps to maintain the safety and welfare of staff, patients, visitors and to the ward.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process, new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

High-Cost Area Supplement - London

This post also attracts payment for High-Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,714 and a maximum payment of £5,941).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will lead in the assessment planning implementation and evaluation of nursing care. This will include managing the daily functioning of the ward, responsibility for all staff management, resource allocation, modernisation and development of the workforce and services and overseeing patient referrals and assessments.

The post holder is responsible for ensuring that supervision, appraisal and PDP are embedded in practice. They will promote supervision as a positive influence for practice. The post holder will provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in clinical settings and service areas to staff, patients and carers. The post holder will bring about contemporary evidence based nursing interventions, facilitating a culture shift in accordance with the Trust values.

Essential criteria

1. Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN)
2. NVQ level 2 or equivalent standard of literacy and numeracy
3. Evidence of personal development

Experience

4. Clinical experience in mental health work as a Band 6 for 2 years.
5. Relevant experience of working as part of an inpatient team
6. Commitment to working as part of a multi-disciplinary team
7. Ability to support and supervise staff

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria

8. An awareness of NHS Plan, National Service Framework (NSF) and clinical governance priorities
9. Good understanding of Clinical Governance
10. Knowledge of services provided by other agencies
11. Able to communicate complex information to other professionals.
