Job Overview
We are looking for a ward leader to cover maternity leave on D5. This position is for a year, the role requires the successful applicant to provide clinical oversight and leadership for the patients and staff on D5.
D5 is our female respiratory ward with 28 beds, this comprises of 4 Bays and 4 Side Rooms.
D5 provides excellent clinical care to a variety of respiratory conditions, both acute and chronic.
The D5 team is well established and cohesive.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
The ward leader is responsible for the day to day running of the department. Whilst ensuring the ward meets the quality indicators for care. Main roles covered by the ward leader:
* Ensure staff wellbeing and manage any concerns.
* Have budgetary oversight of the ward.
* Promote and initiate local resolution to concerns, and if necessary, respond to formal complaints.
* Advocate for patients and staff about service needs.
* Maintain safety standards including auditing, investigate AER’s and patient safety incidents, have oversight on AARs around falls and pressure sores.
* Ensure the ward is adhering to health and safety, moving and handling and medication safety policy.
* Ensure the staff are being managed under the correct human resources policies.
* Ensure staff training and development needs are met.
* Ensure annual appraisals for all staff.
* Represent and attend clinical governance meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings, and workforce planning meetings.
* Be involved with succession planning; development of staff and actively be involved with recruitment- interviewing etc.
* Be a bleep holder for staffing within the care group.
* Provide clinical expertise and oversight, working alongside a large multidisciplinary team to meet service user needs.
What We're Looking For
* Clinical Credibility in Respiratory and Acute Medical care.
* Ensure early flow from the front door i.e. ED and AMU and to ensure we can timely admit step downs from critical care areas, and admissions from our specialist services.
* Reduce length of stay of patients; ensuring that they and the team are escalating barriers to treatment, ensuring these for example reviews and investigations are happening within a timely manner. To have oversight on all patients to ensure timely and safe discharges. Co-ordinating with the discharge team, matrons and operational team to ensure timely discharge meetings.

Qualifications, Knowledge, And Experience
Essential criteria
* 1st Level Registered nurse on relevant part of the NMC Register
* Recognised mentorship qualification and experience as a Sign Off mentor
* Degree or working towards
* Completion of appropriate specialty Course
* Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice. Supporting a range of learners in practice Supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
* Extensive experience in specialty to include considerable experience at Band 6 level
* Evidence of clinical leadership ability Proven management experience
* Evidence of continuing professional development
* Evidence of utilising evidence in practice Logical and consistent career pattern
* Expert clinical skills
* Ability to work flexible hours and fulfil service requirements
* Ability to prioritise and deliver agreed objectives
Desirable criteria
* Management Course (or equivalent)
* Experience as an NMC sign off mentor or clinical practice assessor
* Evidence of staff development and succession planning
* Broad range of post registration experience
* Experience of report writing
