Overview
The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking an exceptional Consultant Hepatologist to join our enthusiastic and forward‑thinking team in Cornwall. We are looking for someone with passion and drive to innovate with a mature outlook and an interest in research.
The Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology is large, highly developed and innovative, with substantial recent investment and expansion. The hepatology service is delivered by two consultants, one Consultant Nurse and specialist nurses. A community based Hepatitis C program in conjunction with the hospital-based service was highly commended in the National Quality & Care awards in 2014.
Inpatient hepatology is supported by luminal gastroenterologists and hepatologists; an Alcohol Liaison Team provides seven‑day on-ward brief interventions to prevent alcohol‑related admissions. The hospital offers a seven‑day roaming paracentesis service delivered by interventional radiology nurses. The department is engaged in end‑of‑life pathway development and has achieved IQILS accreditation level 2.
Main duties of the job
Over the last few years £3.4m has been invested to refurbish and expand the endoscopy unit. The department has six rooms on the Royal Cornwall site and one room at the West Cornwall site. A new mobile trans‑nasal endoscopy service has been approved and will be operational soon. The department has won awards for green endoscopy innovations and was the first in the UK to utilise Entonox scrubbing equipment. The endoscopy workforce includes new consultant and non‑consultant endoscopists.
Bowel cancer screening has been well established since 2009. The service is fully age extended (56‑75, with invitations to 54‑year‑olds forthcoming). We perform well at QA visits and meet key KPIs. We currently have seven accredited screening colonoscopists across two sites, supported by a fully staffed admin and SSP nursing team. We participate in national research studies including SEAFOOD and COLO‑PREVENT.
