Overview
Our client, a leading public body responsible for protecting England's historic environment, is seeking two
Inspectors of Historic Buildings and Areas
to join their Development Advice team in Bristol.
This role offers the opportunity to help shape the future of England's historic places by providing expert advice on managing change within historic buildings and landscapes. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring heritage assets are conserved and adapted sustainably while supporting local authorities, owners, and communities.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide statutory and non-statutory advice on proposals affecting the historic environment.
* Apply
constructive conservation principles
to deliver practical, sustainable solutions.
* Work with owners, architects, local authorities, and community groups to champion the historic environment.
* Contribute to projects that support wider heritage and placemaking strategies.
* Engage in site inspections, which may include climbing scaffolding or accessing confined spaces.
* Attend occasional community or planning meetings, including evenings or weekends.
Candidate Profile
* Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant subject.
* Broad experience in managing change to historic buildings and areas.
* Strong knowledge of the planning system and relevant legislation.
* Detailed understanding of England's secular and ecclesiastical architectural history.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong negotiation and influencing ability.
* Confidence in advising stakeholders and contributing to complex planning decisions.
