The role
Fugro is looking fora Laboratory Quality Engineer to join world class our geotechnicallaboratory based in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, reporting directly tothe Laboratory Quality Manager. The laboratory usesstate-of-the-art equipment to test soil and rock samples from ourprojects around the world. The types of tests performed areclassification tests, mechanical testing (total and effectivestress tests) as well as various types of advanced tests, allfollowing international standards such as ISO, ASTM, BSetc.
Your role will be tooversee all technical areas of the laboratory's accredited qualitymanagement system, including taking responsibility for equipmentcalibration and metrological traceability, quality assurance andquality control of testing and ensuring the validity of testresults.
This job is for youif:
* You have excellent attention todetail and enjoy work that requires patience andfocus;
* You are highly analytical with acritical eye and take satisfaction in reviewing and evaluatingdata;
* You are highly numerate and literate andkeen on writing and reviewing technicaldocuments.
* You like dealing with numbers,identifying trends and spotting errors.
* You arekeen in reviewing established practices and identifying areas ofimprovement.
Youwill work directly with the Laboratory Quality Manager, supportingthem in quality matters, and liaise closely with all laboratorypersonnel.
Here's what a typical day would belike:
* Calibrating laboratoryequipment, evaluating calibration results and updating equipmentrecords (50% to 75% of your time);
* Schedulingand prioritising calibrations;
* Updating andchecking technical and qualityrecords;
* Training and supervising of personnelin performing calibrations;
* Troubleshooting anyissues with equipment performance, validity of tests and accuracyof results;
* Investigatingnon-conformances;
As a further progression your role can evolve toinclude:
* Statistical analysis of testresults;
* Validation of complex spreadsheets;
* Calculating uncertainty for tests andcalibrations
* Performing internal system andtechnical audits.
Who we're lookingfor
Essential
* FiveGCSEs (or equivalent), including English, maths and science orequivalent;
* At least two A-levels (orequivalent) in maths and one other science subject, preferablyphysics;
* Practical experience using maths(including algebra, statistics, functions and geometry) and physics(basic mechanics, basic thermodynamics, and SIunits);
* Practical experience in drawingspreadsheets;
* Ability to write technicaldocuments, presentations andreports;
* Proficient in use of all MS Officeapplications, especially Word, Excel andAccess.
Desirable
* Bachelor'sdegree or equivalent in technical/scientific/geotechnicalsubject;
* Previous laboratory experience testingsoils or construction materials;
* Experience ofworking in an ISO 17025 accreditedlaboratory.
