Role: Legal Costs AssistantSalary: £26,000Location: Sheffield, South YorkshireContract: Full time, permanentThis role supports the end-to-end management of legal cost recovery, ensuring financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, and timely closure of files. The post holder plays a key role in finalising matters so they are fully reconciled and ready for secure storage. Role: Working within a specialist financial operations team, the role holder will manage a portfolio of live and settled matters. The position requires close collaboration with colleagues across the business, regular engagement with clients and representative bodies, and interaction with a range of external service providers. DUTIES: Manage cost recovery activity in line with professional accounting standards and regulatory requirementsDraft and maintain cost schedules for a range of personal injury matters, including road traffic, workplace, and public liability claims, under both fixed and portal-based frameworksChallenge and negotiate fees with external suppliers such as medical providers and legal advocates where appropriateReview financial transactions to identify advance or interim payments and ensure these are recovered from third partiesLead negotiations with opposing parties to agree final costsTrack outstanding invoices and take responsibility for ensuring payment is receivedProcess and allocate incoming funds, including costs, client settlements, and disbursement paymentsMaintain accurate digital and physical file records, handling correspondence and document management tasksCoordinate the instruction and return of files involving external cost specialistsEnsure all bills issued are correct, complete, and compliant prior to submissionReconcile client and office accounts, ensuring all balances are cleared at the conclusion of a matterLiaise with representative organisations to confirm eligibility or membership status and support authorised deductions where applicableComplete all actions required to close files and prepare them for archivingContribute to team performance by meeting agreed targets and service standards Skills & Experience:Essential Requirements Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlinesStrong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and complianceConfident communicator with effective negotiation skillsHighly organised with a structured approach to workload managementCompetent user of standard office software, including spreadsheets and document toolsComfortable working independently while contributing positively to a team environmentAdaptable and resilient within a changing operational settingNumerate with strong analytical capabilityEducated to a good general standard Desirable Experience: Familiarity with legal finance processes or solicitor accounting frameworksFormal qualification in mathematics or a related subject Additional Information: CRA Legal follow strict best practice recruitment guidelines monitored by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC).
