Occupational Therapist - Stroke and Neuro

This role supports the delivery of high-quality patient care by providing assessment, rehabilitation and supports to adults with stroke and diverse neurological conditions to regain or maximise independence in daily life. It focuses on enabling meaningful participation in personal care, domestic tasks, work, leisure, and community life, despite physical, cognitive, perceptual, or emotional impairments. This covers the whole Borough of Redbridge.


Main duties of the job

Providing specialist occupational therapy assessment and treatment to patients in the community with Stroke and a variety of complex neurological needs, taking into consideration the patient’s physical/cognitive/perceptual skills to identify the patient’s abilities and areas of difficulty. To assess the therapy needs of a defined patient group and establish and evaluate appropriate treatment plans. This includes chronic, acute, palliative care, stroke and neurological conditions within own competencies, recognising own limitations and seeking advice when necessary. Achieving and maintaining quality care through the delivery of evidence-based practice and adherence with national guidelines. Working as part of the multidisciplinary team across the Stroke and Neurology pathway, liaising and supporting our specialist nurses in the community as required. Collaborative working and actively support and liaise with other health and social care professionals and agencies. Support their peers and team leader and be an effective team member whilst working on their own initiative, also supervise placement students.

Job responsibilities

Detailed job description and main responsibilities- refer to full JD and person specification attached. The post holder will be responsible for managing their own workload, prioritising tasks effectively, and ensuring deadlines are met. The post holder will be expected to comply with the service Key performance indicators. They will be expected to work independently as well as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to high standards. The role may involve working across multiple sites and requires excellent communication and organisational skills. Able to commute throughout the London borough of Redbridge.


Clinical Skills

* Act as an autonomous, registered practitioner who is legally and professionally accountable for own unsupervised actions guided by the professional code of conduct and Trust guidelines and protocols.
* Provide a range of specialist Occupational therapy assessment of patients, including those with multiple pathologies and complex needs, taking into considerations the patient’s physical/cognitive/perceptual skills to identify the patient’s abilities and areas of difficulties.
* Perform a comprehensive assessment of patients using clinical reasoning skills and assessment techniques to formulate a treatment plan based on clinical findings of their condition.
* Experience with use of various cognitive assessment tools and treatment.
* Experience assessment and rehabilitation of upper limb deficits as a result of specific neurological conditions.
* Be able to assess and develop exercise programmes to meet the complex needs of patients with a variety of conditions. This includes chronic, acute and palliative care within own competencies, recognising own limitations and seeking advice when necessary. Continuously evaluate and act on outcomes.
* Initiate referrals to other health professional specialist services and agencies.
* Responsible for organising and prioritising own caseload, whilst able to work flexibly to meet the needs of their patients, relatives, carers and the service.
* Provide patients and relatives with information and education ensuring they have meaningful choices that promote dignity, independence, and quality of life.
* Ensure practice is supported by research, evidence‑based practice, literature, and peer review.


Starting with NELFT

NELFT places a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will also have the opportunity to meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop‑in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.


Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).


High Cost Area Supplement – Outer London

This post also attracts payment for High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (with a minimum of £4,714 to a maximum of £5,941 p.a. pro rata for part time).
