Job overview

The Urology Department at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton is seeking to recruit a Surgical First Assistant based at Royal Derby Hospital.

The role of the Surgical First Assistant is crucial in the surgical team, providing support to urologists during procedures and ensuring the smooth operation of surgical interventions. This position demands a high level of expertise, dedication, and the ability to work in a fast-paced and challenging environment.

The Urology Surgical First Assistant position is an excellent opportunity for healthcare professionals passionate about surgical care and patient welfare. Main duties of the job

· Assist in preparing the operating room, ensuring all necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies are available and sterilized. Collaborate with the surgical team to review patient information and surgical plans.

· Work closely with the urology consultants during surgical procedures, providing skilled hands-on assistance. Tasks may include retracting tissues, suctioning blood, assisting with suturing, and handling surgical instruments.

· Help in the transfer of patients from the operating room to recovery areas. Monitor patients' post-surgical conditions, assist with dressing wounds, and provide postoperative instructions to patients and their families.

· Maintain accurate and thorough records of surgical procedures, including patient information, surgical notes, and inventory of instruments and supplies.

· Communicate effectively with surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and other medical professionals to ensure coordinated patient care. Participate in team meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of surgical practices.

· Adhere to all hospital policies, protocols, and safety standards. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay updated on best practices.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Substantial experience as a Surgical First Assistant (or equivalent experience) within a Theatre practitioner role.
* Significant experience in a variety of theatre specialties
* Experience in robotic and laparoscopic urology procedures


Qualifications and Training

* NMC Registered Nurse (with NMC) or Operating Department Practitioner (with HCPC registration)
* Surgical First Assistant University Module (Level 6)
* MSPP (mentor) formally the advanced scrub practitioner course
* Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) at degree level


Skills and Ability

* Ability to communicate with patients, relatives, peers and other professional groups
* Competence in wound closure, suction, haemostasis, tissue handling and instrument handling


Audit

* Participation in surgical audit or service improvement projects
