Position Details

Job Description: Director of Facilities

Job Summary:

The Director of Facilities is responsible for the overall planning, management, and maintenance of all school district facilities and grounds. This includes ensuring a safe, clean, and efficient learning environment for students, staff, and the community. The director leads facility operations, including custodial services, grounds, maintenance, and construction projects, while adhering to local, state, and federal regulations. The Director of Facilities collaborates, communicates, manages, prioritizes, and serves as a service-oriented administrator within the district team.

Qualifications:

Education:

1. Bachelor’s degree in leadership, education, facilities management, or a related field. A master’s degree is preferred.

Experience:

2. Minimum of 5 years of experience in management, preferably in a school.
3. Minimum of 5 years of facilities experience

Certifications:

4. State Journeyman/Master Plumber, State Journeyman/Master Electrician, HVAC EPA 608 (Universal), S-2 Water Distribution.

Skills:

5. Strong leadership and team management abilities.
6. Excellent communication and organizational skills.
7. Proficiency in budgeting, project management, and vendor negotiation.
8. Knowledge of building systems, energy management, and sustainability practices.
9. Ability to work collaboratively with school administration, staff, and external contractors.

Working Conditions:

The Director of Facilities typically works during standard business hours but may need to respond to emergency situations or oversee projects outside of regular hours. This role involves both office-based work and frequent on-site visits to various school buildings and grounds.

Key Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance & Operations:

10. Oversee the cleaning, repair, and maintenance of school buildings and grounds.
11. Develop and implement maintenance schedules to ensure all facilities are in optimal condition.
12. Ensure that all building systems, including HVAC, electrical, and plumbing are functioning effectively.
13. Address emergency maintenance needs promptly.
14. Respond to system alarms and alerts in a timely manner.

Facility Planning & Capital Projects:

15. Work with district administration to plan and prioritize capital improvement projects.
16. Supervise construction, renovation, and expansion projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with regulations.
17. Develop long-term facility management plans for future growth and upgrades.

Budgeting & Financial Oversight:

18. Manage the facilities budget, ensuring the efficient allocation of resources for maintenance, operations, and improvements.
19. Procure and oversee contracts with vendors and service providers for facility-related services.
20. Identify opportunities for cost-saving measures and energy-efficient practices.

Safety & Compliance:

21. Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations, including fire codes and accessibility requirements.
22. Conduct regular inspections and audits of facilities to identify potential hazards or areas for improvement.

Leadership & Supervision:

23. Supervise and provide leadership to custodial, maintenance, and grounds staff, including scheduling, performance evaluations, and professional development.
24. Foster a team-oriented environment focused on efficiency, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
25. Collaborate with school administration, staff, and community stakeholders to address facility-related concerns and needs.

Energy Management & Sustainability:

26. Develop and implement energy-saving initiatives to reduce the school district’s environmental footprint and utility costs.

Inventory & Asset Management:

27. Manage and maintain records of all school district facilities, including equipment, materials, and supply inventories.
28. Ensure proper usage and longevity of school property, tracking repairs and replacements as necessary.

Terms:

29. The Director of Facilities is a year-round (260-day) position which follows the Administrative Personnel Agreement and reports to Central Office Administration.
