3 Clinical Fellow posts are available to commence with immediate effect until 4 August 2026.
Role Overview
The Clinical Fellow posts in Acute and General Medicine at the Western General Hospital are aimed at FY2+ level i.e. those Doctors having completed the UK Foundation programme and having been assessed as "acute take safe" under supervision who are looking for some further experience of acute and general medicine. This may be to further pursue a career in medicine or to provide professional development adjunct to any future clinical activity. We also welcome applications from doctors more senior than immediately post-FY2 and roles may be negotiable dependent on experience. There are 10 other Clinical Fellows working within this structure in the department.
Responsibilities
* Work within the acute medical unit, including first‑hand experience of medical emergencies and resuscitation (with appropriate support) as well as periods of continuing care for downstream medical patients.
* Opportunity to gain experience in Same Day Emergency Care.
* Participate in a rota including out of hours working, night shifts and weekends; efforts made to ensure healthy working lives and facilitate work‑life balance.
* Support and assistance in preparation for postgraduate examinations; support in application and interview process for training routes such as IMT, ACCS, GPST or any other required.
* Include 10% development time – tailored to applicant’s interests, particularly in medical education, simulation teaching, quality improvement and clinical governance work.
* Participate in the clinical educators programme or quality improvement training programme offered locally.
* Opportunity to explore region‑based teaching in point‑of‑care ultrasound.
* Develop leadership experience and liaison with specialties of interest for joint projects to aid patient safety or experience in Acute/General Medicine.
* Engagement with weekly departmental education programme, monthly morbidity and mortality meetings and specific postgraduate resident doctor teaching.
Working Areas
* Medical Admissions Unit Emergency (MAUE) – Unselected medical take, focus on triage, stabilisation, assessment, management, with specialist registrar support 9:00‑21:30 and night team covering 21:00‑09:00; consultant presence 08:30‑20:00.
* Medical Admissions Unit Beds (MAUB) and Ward 72 – Ongoing clinical management of patients requiring inpatient stay, twice daily consultant ward rounds, staffing includes FY1 doctors and clinical pharmacists, discharge planning.
* General Medical Wards – Two wards each with two medical teams, responsible for ongoing inpatient management including chronic medical conditions, multidisciplinary working, complex discharge planning; expects support of consultant ward rounds and independent ward rounds.
Qualifications
* FY2+ level, completion of the UK Foundation programme.
* Assessed as "acute take safe" under supervision.
* Preferably experience or interest in acute and general medicine; senior doctors also considered.
