General Adult Inpatient Consultant Psychiatrist at Tower Hamlets Centre for Mental Health (linked with Isle of Dogs Neighbourhood Mental Health Team)
This is a 10PAs position.
The post is within a well-established acute psychiatric unit spread over two gender-specific wards. The primary focus is on inpatient care for residents of the Isle of Dogs area in Tower Hamlets or patients supported by the Isle of Dogs Neighbourhood Mental Health Team (IoD NMHT). The appointed consultant will provide clinical leadership and serve as Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients. The role involves collaboration with colleagues responsible for the Stepney and Wapping areas and the Tower Hamlets Early Intervention for Psychosis Services (THEIS). The inpatient wards have a capacity of 19 beds each: Roman Ward for females and Lea Ward for males.
The model separating community and inpatient responsibilities was adopted during the pandemic. The post aims to maintain strong links with the community team, with the current role including 2 sessions of clinical care in the community.

Main Duties of the Job

The 1.0 Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) job plan will be developed to meet service needs, envisaged to include 7.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 2.5 PAs for supporting programmed activities (SPA). Responsibilities include providing consultant input to inpatient wards and the Neighbourhood Mental Health Team, including patient assessments, management plan development, and clinical leadership.

Job Responsibilities

The post-holder will provide clinical leadership and assume responsibility for patients aligned with their GP practice and managed by the Neighbourhood Mental Health Service. This includes Responsible Clinician status for detained patients and those on Community Treatment Orders, and may involve leading compliance with the Mental Health Act and CQC requirements. Responsibilities include participating in patient assessments, developing care plans addressing psychiatric, physical, and social needs, conducting detailed psychiatric assessments, and devising evidence-based treatment plans, including pharmacological management. Emphasis is placed on a recovery approach, placing the service user at the center of planning and decision-making. Effective communication with the patient's care coordinator and GP is essential, and reviews will involve carers and other professionals as needed.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
* Full GMC registration
* Eligible for GMC Specialist Register inclusion (or within 6 months of CCT)
* Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
* Eligible for Approved Clinician status (MHA, 2007)
* Higher Degree in relevant area
Knowledge
* Experience in clinical work as a General Adult Psychiatrist at ST4-6 or Consultant level within the last three years
* Knowledge of psychopharmacology
* Proficiency in applying the Mental Health Act
* Understanding of social aspects relevant to psychiatry
* Experience working on a general adult inpatient ward
Clinical Skills
* Ability to lead within a multidisciplinary team
* Expertise in risk assessment and evidence-based interventions for psychosis, mood disorders, and co-morbidities
* Commitment to clinical governance
* Senior leadership experience
