Overview

The Pathology departments at University Hospitals North Tees and Hartlepool (NTH) and South Tees Hospitals (STH) are working collaboratively to develop a joint service called Tees Valley Pathology (TVP) with services being delivered on all hospital sites.


Position

We are seeking applications from suitable enthusiastic candidates for a full‑time position as a Healthcare Science Support worker (higher level) to join our scientific team and participate in the delivery of services provided by Cellular Pathology. The Cellular pathology service is part of the TVP service operating out of University Hospital North Tees and Hartlepool Hospital, Stockton on Tees, Hartlepool Hospital, The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough and the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton.


Responsibilities

The main purpose of the role is to assist Biomedical Scientists and Pathologists in provision of a diagnostic service.

* Assisting at specimen dissections
* Providing support to ensure efficient workflow
* Maintaining some laboratory equipment
* General housekeeping tasks throughout the laboratory

The post holder will work as part of a dedicated, multi‑skilled and flexible team of staff to provide an efficient, high quality service within the Cellular Pathology department.

The post holder will follow an in‑house competency training programme and, after suitable training and competency assessment, work on a rotational basis performing an extensive range of laboratory support tasks and assisting consultant and technical staff in the preparation of histological and cytological specimens.

The post holder will work under direct and indirect supervision always following laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The post holder will be expected to deal with direct queries from Medical Staff, Nursing Staff and other Service Users, including telephone enquiries and taking appropriate action as necessary.

This role may include the training and supervision of other scientific and administrative staff.

The post holder will be expected to assist in the monitoring, organisation and working of the department.


Qualifications

Excellent organisational skills, effective interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work using one’s own initiative to meet tight deadlines.


Working Hours & Schedule

Department operates between 07.00 – 18.00, Monday to Friday, including a 1:6 Saturday rotation.
