Job Description:
About the Role
We are looking for up to 5 fully funded PhD candidates across a range of disciplines to carry out advanced research in building security and resilience in a digitalised world. This is part of a partnership led academically by the Universities of Surrey and Strathclyde, supported by the Surrey-Strathclyde-NPL strategic partnership and industry partners.
The world is increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous. Our Critical Infrastructure depends more on digital technologies, which introduces new strengths and vulnerabilities. Advances in communications, networking, robotics, sensing, data processing, AI, and cloud computing are making disruptions more unpredictable, especially as they cascade through interconnected systems.
The research focuses on achieving resilience in critical infrastructure systems, maintaining their functionality across digital, physical, and human aspects amidst change, disruptions, and attacks. Key areas include resilience-by-design, understanding and managing complexity, planning for uncertainty and risk, cyber resilience, trustworthiness, measurement, and the use of data, digital tools, and AI.
Students will join a multidisciplinary cohort across the Universities of Surrey and Strathclyde, developing their projects with supervision and industry collaboration. The program emphasizes building a "resilience mindset"—self-direction, questioning, complex problem-solving, collaboration, and continuous learning. Industry facilities across sectors like communication, timing, power, and transport will be accessible.

We welcome applicants from non-traditional routes, such as industry returnees, career changers, or those with equivalent experience without formal qualifications. We support Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion and are open to discussing alternative study modes.
