About the role
This role has responsibility for the care and curation of the Marine Invertebrate Zoology collection, which includes a diversity of phyla including echinoderms, sponges, and corals, for the WA Museum. This position is charged with promoting the Museum's science in relation to this Collection, and involves conducting original research, attracting external funds for research activities, and contributing to public exhibitions aimed at promoting learning and understanding of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Nurturing collaborations with academic institutions and allied government departments are a critical aspect of this position.
About you
We are looking for a dynamic, self-motivated individual who values teamwork and has experience leading partnered, collections-based biodiversity research in remote locations.
The successful applicant will be expected to:
1. Inform a wide range of stakeholders about the environment and systematics of Western Australian marine invertebrates.
2. Contribute to Department research and strategic advice on research and collection policy.
3. Conduct original scientific research using contemporary taxonomic methods and approaches, such as genotyping, 3D imaging and SEM.
4. Publish findings in international, peer-reviewed journals.
5. Pursue activities to translate research results into changes that enhance public benefit.
6. Co-supervise Honours and Post-graduate students in collaboration with university colleagues.
7. Maintain, and build new collaborations with relevant state, national and international agencies.
8. Work as a part of a multidisciplinary team to develop thematic concepts and exhibition ideas drawing on research findings.
9. Communicate results of work to the wider community by way of talks, seminars and lectures.
10. Answer public enquiries and liaise with visiting scientists.(*For full list of duties see JDF)
