Job Overview This in an exciting opportunity to experience Intensive Care Medicine in a busy district general hospital with prior anaesthetic/intensive care experience an advantage. The Critical Care Unit is an Intensivist led combined ITU and HDU with 5 level 3 and 7 level 2 beds, although these beds can be used flexibly. The unit cares for all general surgical and medical admissions (including Obstetric) and offers advanced respiratory support as well as full renal support. The unit is the regional tertiary referral site for upper GI surgery. Whilst the unit is an adult unit, the critical care team is responsible for the initial stabilisation and management of critically ill children prior to transfer. There is a separate ITU Consultant on call rota supported by a dedicated ITU resident. There is also support from two Advanced Critical Care Practitioners. The successful candidate would be rostered on call with a resident anaesthetic registrar to provide airway cover. The unit is part of the Wales Critical Care & Trauma Network and a member of ICNARC It is actively involved in national audit and research projects. Care bundles are well established and are closely audited. Main duties of the job Key Duties of the Post Day to Day care of patients on the Intensive Care, High Dependency and Post Anaesthesia Care units, including acute admissions, ward rounds and acutely deteriorating patients. Assessment of referrals from the Emergency Department, General Wards supported by the acute intervention team. Participation in full-shift resident on-call for Critical Care. The on call rota is worked on a 1:8 basis with prospective cover. Initially covering long days and subject to satisfactory progress extending to include 1 week of nights (Mon-Thurs), 1 weekend of days and 1 weekend of nights (Fri-Sun) in an 8 week period. The hours and patterns of work are compliant with the European Working Time Directive. Active participation in Clinical Effectiveness and Governance. Active participation in teaching of junior colleagues, medical students and others in the health care team. The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Full Registration with the GMC with a License to Practice Primary FRCA or equivalent Minimum of 2 years experience in Anaesthesia Desirable criteria FRCA or equivalent Essential Criteria CLINICAL SKILLS AND TRAINING Basic training in general anaesthesia, including paediatrics, and having attained Initial competencies. Basic training in ICM and attained initial competencies. Basic training in obstetric anaesthesia and attained initial competencies Up to date Immediate Life Support Training Desirable criteria ALS / APLS / ATLS or equivalent Relevant medical experience outside anaesthesia Courses relevant to any sub-specialty interest Teaching Experience Desirable criteria Formal Educational Qualification Active regular participation in teaching and training of medical and para-medical colleagues Clinical governance Essential Criteria Evidence of participation and understanding. Evidence of reflective practice Desirable criteria Evidence of completed Quality Improvement projects that have changed practice. Presentations at regional and national meetings Publications in peer reviewed journal Personal Attributes Essential Criteria Good organisational skills Commitment to team working Good interpersonal skills Good written and spoken English Reliable, self-motivated and punctual.
