The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is part of the Department for Transport (DfT), and our purpose is to improve aviation safety by determining the circumstances and causes of aircraft accidents and serious incidents and promoting aviation safety by determining the circumstances and causes of aircraft accidents and serious incidents and promoting safety action to prevent recurrence. We investigate accidents and serious incidents to civil aircraft in the UK and overseas, where there is a UK interest. Find out more about what it's like working at AAIB Working for AAIB - Air Accidents Investigation Branch - GOV.UK Job description This is a crucially important role at the leading edge of aviation safety. You will be instrumental in determining the circumstances in which civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents take place worldwide, highlighting factors which influenced the outcome and indicating areas where change would lead to further improvements in safety. Working as part of an investigation team, Inspectors of Air Accidents (Recorded Data) manage the investigation of all aspects of an aircraft accident or serious incident where recorded data, form both on-board (e.g. flight recorders) and off-board sources (e.g. rada data/radio telephony recordings).The recovery and replay of the recorded data, analysis of this data to assess aircraft performance and the drafting of Safety Recommendations and reports. The role involves extensive liaison with your colleagues and technical personnel from aircraft manufacturers, operators, maintainers, and regulators. You will be expected to attend Coroners' court and give evidence. Your responsibilities will include, but aren't limited to: Deploying at short notice to civil aircraft accidents and serious incidents within the UK or worldwide. Conducting detailed technical investigations in the UK and overseas in the UK's Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies. Supporting foreign safety investigation authorities in their work. Producing reports into the recorded data aspects of an event and promoting action to improve safety. Keeping the families of victims of fatal accidents informed of the progress of an investigation and briefing them on the findings and conclusions. Giving technical evidence at coroners' inquests to explain the findings of a report. Identify safety issues and actively monitor safety actions or make safety recommendations to address them. Writing software tools, console and GUI-based to support the development activities of the recorded data group. For further information on the role, please read the attached role profile. Person specification Essential qualifications/licenses: A valid passport for international travel A full UK driving license You will need to hold an Aerospace Engineering or other relevant technical degree together with experience commensurate with that of a Chartered Engineer, or having already achieved Chartered Engineer status. You will be required to provide evidence that you hold any essential qualifications/licenses at some point during the recruitment process. Required experience: To be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience: Extensive professional aviation and aerospace engineering experience possibly better tested at interview A good knowledge of modern avionic systems and system architecture. Experience of writing GUI-based software tools in a modern language (e.g. Python/.NET) Additional Information Due to the nature of AAIB operations, the successful candidate will be exposed to situations, information and material of a sensitive of a sensitive or traumatic nature. You will also be required to use tact and compassion when meeting the victims of accidents, bereaved relatives and witnesses, and when working with colleagues in stressful conditions. It is essential that you consider how you would react to these aspects of the role before applying. Potential applicants are welcome to contact the AAIB for further information (contact point below) Working hours, office attendance and travel requirements You will be contracted to work 37 hours each week and expected to spend at least 60% of your working time either at the AAIB offices at Farnborough House or at other locations on official business. The AAIB site is in a semi-rural area and is not served by public transport, but there is a secure car park on site together with covered bike sheds and changing facilities with showers. There will be occasions where you will be required to travel internationally, sometimes at short notice. The role requires the position holder to be on-call for deployments anywhere in the world at short notice, except whilst on Annual Leave or by mutual agreement with your line manager. A roster is managed to ensure there will be periods where you are less likely to be called. An allowance for being on call is included at part of the basic salary. Training You will be required to complete six weeks of training on a residential course to learn the basics of accident investigation and, throughout your employment, will be encouraged to learn about new techniques and develop your professional and investigation skills. You will undertake training to enable you to carry out your role safely in a wide range of environments, including offshore and in mountainous terrain. You will also be encouraged to develop general aviation flying experience.
