Mechanical Engineer – CMS2 – Critical Maritime Systems & Support

Description: Mechanical Engineers are responsible for mechanical engineering and test activities, working proactively with Project Managers and the wider technical team to deliver the technical content of projects against customer requirements. The engineer will design mechanical components and systems, support design, development, and implementation of mechanical systems across a range of engineering projects.
Key Responsibilities:
* Produce engineering drawings in compliance with BS.8888 using CAD software.
* Undertake compliance assessments for certification and approvals.
* Support selection of components to meet customer‑defined specifications.
* Create project documentation: ILS, RCM, RAM, Design Reports, Operating Manuals.
* Conduct safety, risk assessments and FMEAs.
* Prepare design reviews, calculations, reliability calculations and test plans.
* Attend design and project meetings; participate in system reviews and verification activities.
* Communicate with design and technical authority throughout the project term.
* Ensure alignment with customer requirements and project deliverables.
* Report progress to Engineering Team Lead.
* Maintain parts details, sub‑assemblies and bill of materials; apply change procedure.
General Activities:
* Carry out any other ad‑hoc duties as required.
* Follow company procedures, standards and regulatory requirements.
* Maintain continuous professional development.
* Act as an ambassador for the company in all interactions with customers and the public.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise – Essential:
* Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
* Understanding of legislative compliance technical files and reviews.
* Proficient user of SolidWorks or similar 3D CAD software.
* Good knowledge of BS.8888 drawing practices and geometric tolerances.
* Self‑motivated, pragmatic and able to work well under own initiative.
* Strong self‑management, organisation skills and attention to detail.
* Ability to design for high quality and cost effective manufacture.
Desirable:
* Apprenticeship in relevant engineering field.
* Experience within a manufacturing and defence environment.
* Experience of military equipment design standards.
* IOSH Working Safely certification.
* 5S / LEAN continuous improvement experience.
Other Requirements:
* Right to live and work in the UK.
* UK security clearance (SC) or ability to obtain SC clearance; residency of minimum 5 years for SC, 3 years for basic check.
Travel: Some travel to MoD sites in the UK and customer sites overseas may occasionally be required.
