Overview

Following our exciting $52 million upgrade programme for our ST40 spherical tokamak in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and our goal to deliver and innovate at pace, we have an exciting opportunity to lead plasma control within the Diagnostics, Data and Control Department.
The Plasma Control Team plays a critical role in delivering key programmes and projects of strategic importance. Led by the Team Lead, the team manages the development, maintenance, and operation of the Plasma Control System for Tokamak Energy’s flagship tokamak, ST40. They also develop advanced plasma control solutions for current and future fusion devices, including control-oriented modelling, scenario modelling, and experimental scenario development to enhance plasma control systems. Reporting to the Department Head, your responsibilities include technical leadership, team development, resource allocation, and ensuring safe, effective project delivery.
Requirements
In this role, you will:
* Provide technical leadership and expertise in tokamak plasma control systems to support existing programmes, including ST40 and the Fusion Pilot Plant, and identify new opportunities.
* Leverage external networks for collaborations and opportunities in plasma control.
* Define and implement the technical strategy for plasma control, diagnostics, and modelling tools in collaboration with stakeholders.
* Develop a plasma control ecosystem to innovate beyond current capabilities and create commercial opportunities.
* Lead high-quality software delivery across projects.
* Manage the safety, well-being, growth, and performance of the Plasma Control team.
* Allocate resources effectively to support project needs.
* Develop team skills and capabilities aligned with business strategy.
* Act as an escalation point for team issues, working closely with department leadership.
* Lead environment, health, and safety initiatives for the team and labs.
Valued Attributes and Requirements:
* Expertise in tokamak plasma control or related fields, with an understanding of underlying principles and challenges.
* Experience in designing, installing, commissioning, and operating scientific software in a tokamak environment.
* Strong network within plasma control, tokamak, and fusion research sectors.
* Proven ability to influence stakeholders and deliver complex projects.
* Experience applying software development best practices.
* Outstanding problem-solving skills.
* Ability to manage a multidisciplinary team effectively.
* Understanding of resource management and performance development tools.
* Excellent communication skills to motivate and engage the team.
* Delivery focus with customer needs in mind.
* Degree or equivalent in a relevant technical discipline.
* Fluency in MATLAB/Simulink.
* Experience with real-time systems and an understanding of tokamaks and plasma control.
* Record of scientific publications and commercial awareness.

Safety-Critical Duties
