Overview
This is an opportunity to earn a BSc (Hons) in Therapeutic Radiography through a level 6 apprenticeship with Sheffield Hallam University. The programme combines academic study (mostly distance learning) with practical training in our Radiotherapy departments. On successful completion and HCPC registration, you will become a recruited Therapeutic Radiographer.
Programme Start Date: March 2026. Interviews: approx. October 2025.
Locations include The Royal Sussex County Hospital, Preston Park Radiotherapy Centre, and Eastbourne Radiotherapy Unit in Eastbourne.
Main duties
* Spend 80% of time in a Radiotherapy Support Worker role and 20% learning off the job in dedicated learning activities.
* Gain experience in all aspects of radiotherapy service delivery, cancer care and oncology.
* Learn about patient care, treatment planning, radiation delivery, and quality assurance.
* Develop the proficiency and skills required to qualify as a HCPC registered Therapeutic Radiographer.
* Receive academic and clinical mentorship throughout the apprenticeship and beyond.
Job Description
Support the radiotherapy team with day-to-day operations while developing skills to become an autonomous practitioner. Ensure patients are treated with courtesy, individual needs are respected, and confidentiality is maintained. Be able to cannulate patients or undertake training to perform this duty. Ensure patients are correctly identified, pregnancy checked and consented for treatment in accordance with IRMER, local radiation rules and department policy. Qualifications
Essential
* All applicants must be 18 years or over at the start of the course and have the right to live in the UK and be eligible for apprenticeship funding
* GCSE Maths and English at level 2 or above (grade 4 or above) or ENIC evidence
* If English is not your first language, IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 5.5 in all skills or equivalent
* Evidence of successful formal study at level 3
* Minimum of 6 months experience in a health and social care capacity OR one of the following: 96 UCAS points from three A levels or equivalent; Access to HE Diploma; Level 3 Apprenticeship; Higher Technical Qualifications; Level 4/5 qualifications; Previous Degree
* Demonstrable understanding of the role of a Therapeutic Radiographer
* Awareness of the Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship Programme and scope of practice
Desirable
* Experience in a healthcare setting or customer-oriented service
* Knowledge of the Radiotherapy process, e.g., previously worked in cancer care
* Awareness of IRR (2017), IR(ME)R (2017) and professional codes of practice
