Our client is a leading civil engineering and environmental contractor delivering a diverse portfolio of infrastructure and environmental projects across Scotland. With a strong commitment to safety, innovation, and technical excellence, they are seeking an experienced Temporary Works Design Manager to lead and coordinate temporary works solutions across multiple schemes.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Temporary Works Design Manager to lead and coordinate the design and delivery of temporary works solutions within a civil engineering and environmental project environment. This role is critical in ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant temporary works designs across a range of complex infrastructure projects.
You will act as the key interface between design teams, site teams, and external stakeholders, ensuring all temporary works are designed, checked, approved, and implemented in line with industry standards and best practice.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the planning, management, and coordination of all temporary works design activities
* Ensure compliance with relevant standards, regulations, and company procedures (including BS 5975)
* Manage the Temporary Works Register and ensure all designs are properly categorised, reviewed, and approved
* Liaise with permanent works designers, site engineers, and subcontractors to integrate temporary works into project delivery
* Review and approve temporary works design briefs, calculations, and drawings
* Coordinate design risk assessments and ensure hazards are identified and mitigated
* Act as Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) where required
* Oversee external design consultants, ensuring quality and timely delivery of designs
* Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and site teams
* Conduct site inspections and audits to ensure temporary works are constructed and used in accordance with approved designs
Candidate Requirements
* Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
* Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) preferred
* Strong experience in temporary works design and management within civil engineering or environmental projects
* Thorough understanding of temporary works procedures and standards (including BS 5975)
* Proven experience managing complex temporary works schemes (e.g. shoring, formwork, earthworks support, cofferdams, access systems)
* Excellent coordination, communication, and leadership skills
* Ability to manage multiple stakeholders and competing priorities
* Strong problem-solving and risk management capabilities
Desirable Skills & Experience
* Experience working on environmental, water, or infrastructure projects
* Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) certification or training
* Knowledge of sustainability and environmental best practices in construction
* Familiarity with digital engineering tools and design software
