Job summary
The Clinical Microbiology Department at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) is looking to appoint a Consultant Microbiologist. This is a full-time post consisting of 10 Programmed Activities [PAs] per week, based at Queen Alexandra Hospital. Applicants wishing to work reduced hours will be considered.
About us
Our Microbiology Laboratory is well equipped and is on site in a purpose-built pathology block with an extensive range of diagnostic services, including molecular; the lab is UKAS accredited. The Trust has a good reputation in terms of Infection Prevention and prudent antimicrobial stewardship which has been nationally recognised. Here in Portsmouth, we have a fantastic spectrum of varied cases so very interesting work to include our renal patients. The microbiology clinical team includes a clinical scientist, a trainee clinical scientist, ID/micro Wessex trainees and an FY2 trainee on rotation. The medical team are a small, yet very supportive and friendly collaborative group who work together for the benefit of patients within the Trust, the surrounding community and with colleagues on the Isle of Wight. Main duties of the job
The Consultant clinical duties:
Direct clinical care will consist of a specified duty weekday per week for Microbiology, a specified duty weekday per week for Virology and advisory service to bacteraemic patients during on-call weeks (1 in 7). This is a very clinically orientated job with a substantial ward round commitment especially covering the acute medical wards, direct clinician liaison and antimicrobial stewardship input. The specific microbiology/infection clinical responsibilities will be agreed on commencement. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the Infection Prevention and Control team but will not be expected to take any significant leadership role in infection prevention in the first instance.
On call requirements
The post holder will be required to participate in the microbiology on call rota covering both Trust, 1:7 weekday evening cover 1:7 weekend cover. Remote access to laboratory information management systems facilitates advice on patient management and result authorisation across the two Trusts.

Consultant clinicalduties
Direct clinical care(DCC) will consist of providing an advisory infection service coveringbacteriology, mycology and virology to the Trust and our community partnersduring weekday working hours of 09:00-17:00 for a total of 28 hours per week(7PAs per week), including one week day as duty consultant in the laboratoryand leading antimicrobial stewardshipward rounds and clinical consults across the Trust.
The out-of-hourswork covering clinical queries and urgent infection advice for both PortsmouthHospitals University NHS Trust and Isle of Wight NHS Trust will be sharedequally among the consultant medical microbiologists. Remote access for both Trusts will beprovided to facilitate out-of-hours work.
The post-holder willbe expected to participate in teaching of laboratory staff, junior doctors, andother healthcare staff including pharmacists, to undertake professionaldevelopment, participate in clinical audit, and comply with essential skillstraining and to undertake annual appraisal for revalidation purposes.
Applicants must beregistered Medical Practitioners (with a licence to practise) and on theSpecialist Register of the GMC or be eligible to be on the Specialist Registerwithin 6 months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC) as itis a legal requirement for all doctors to be on the GMC Specialist Registerbefore they can take up a consultant appointment. It is expected that they will have obtainedfellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists or have equivalent experience andtraining.
The consultant willbe managerially accountable to the Chief Executive and Medical Director ofPortsmouth Hospitals University Trust through the Clinical Lead, ClinicalDirector of Pathology, and Care Group Director. All consultants within theMicrobiology Department are members of the Microbiology Management Team.

Essential
1. Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview)
Experience

2. Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
3. Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
4. The Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or its recognised equivalent should ideally be in microbiology and infection
5. Fellowship of the Royal College Pathologists or evidence of equivalent qualification
6. Membership of the Royal College of Physicians
