Job overview

This fixed term 12 months post is for a Consultant in Emergency General Surgery (EGS) with interest in Colorectal surgery. The post is based in the Colorectal Directorate of University Hospital Tees.

The non-elective / emergency work which is the predominant component of this post is undertaken at James Cook University Hospital (JCUH), Middlesbrough which is a busy Major Trauma Centre. The elective Colorectal and General surgical workload is undertaken at both JCUH Middlesbrough, and Friarage Hospital Northallerton, to serve the local populations.

Main duties of the job

The non-elective workload at JCUH is shared by Colorectal and Upper GI Consultants, working under respective Directorates.

The rota is 1 : 16 with paired Colorectal and Upper GI Consultants one of them is oncall for 24 hours and the other one provides Sub-Specialty support between 8 AM 6 PM. The successful candidate shall be doing the oncalls of one Colorectal slot and one Upper GI slot to fill in vacancy and sickness. The oncall rota pattern is available on request.

The Colorectal team delivers EGS and Emergency Colorectal surgery. The Upper GI team are responsible for delivering EGS and Emergency Upper GI Surgery including Hot Gallbladder procedures. Mentoring and support shall be available to otherwise suitable candidate lacking Hot Gallbladder operative experience.

The consultant takes responsibility for patients admitted under their care and provide cover for colleagues patients as per the need. The EGS oncall team comprises of 5 residents in the daytime and 3 residents at night time. There is access to around the clock Emergency theatre, and 4 dedicated sessions of EGS list per week. The EGS service is supported by well-staffed Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit and Hot Clinics.

Person specification

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria

1. Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in general and Colorectal surgery
2. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
3. Advanced laparoscopic skills

Desirable criteria

4. Clinical training and experience equivalent to the requirements for obtaining UK CCT in General Surgery

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria

5. FRCS or equivalent
6. Full registration with GMC

Desirable criteria

7. Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of expected date of CCT/ CESR
8. Higher surgical degree (MD/MS/PhD)
9. Management training

Experience

Essential criteria

10. Relevant experience in any declared specialist interest pertinent to the post
11. Evidence of clinical audit

Desirable criteria

12. Success in obtaining funding for research
13. Evidence of research or innovative service developments
