Job summary
The Home Office works to build a safe, fair and prosperous UK. We achieve this through our work on counter-terrorism, policing, fire, crime, drugs policy, immigration and passports.
Home Office Digital, Data and Technology designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles and property.
Networks and Infrastructure (N&I) within the Home Office are responsible for delivering and maintaining the core infrastructure for all the Home Office. This post sits within the existing Core Infrastructure team in N&I.
The team handles a diverse range of systems, concepts, and technologies. This includes Windows and Linux servers, core Windows technologies such as Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and Certificate Authority. They also manage server and service monitoring, Infrastructure as Code, immutable infrastructure, automation and serverless compute as well as public cloud provided services across several major public cloud vendors. The team collaborates extensively with other traditional infrastructure teams for connectivity and services as well as application teams to move legacy workloads to the cloud.
Job description
An Infrastructure Engineer supports and maintains infrastructure solutions and services as directed and according to departmental policy and Home Office strategy.
You will work in a tea m of Infrastructure Engineers making sure services are delivered and supported as required. You work with and support third parties to provide infrastructure services and with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations.

Like many organisations we need to maintain our services 24/7, therefore, on occasions there may be a requirement to work out of hours, for which you will be paid an additional allowance.
Key Responsibilities
Your main day to day responsibilities will be:
* Building, configuring, transitioning, administering and supporting infrastructure technologies and solutions such as compute, storage, networking, physical infrastructure, software, cloud, commercial off the shelf (COTS) and open-source packages and solutions.
* Resolving technical problems, ensuring that technical solutions continue to meet business requirements taking accountability for actions taken and decisions made.
* Identifying the correct procedures and appropriate channels for resolution and monitor resolution activities and progress updates to users.
* Investigating faults in systems, processes and services, and advise on the implementation of appropriate solutions and preventative measures.
* Working collaboratively to ensure that a set of IT products, suppliers and vendors come together to deliver an IT service.
* Using logical designs created by technical architects and required standards, methods and tools (including prototyping tools where appropriate) to build infrastructure solutions.
* Managing infrastructure monitoring systems to resolve issues before they become incidents.
* Work with senior infrastructure engineers to support automation of existing processes or introduction of new automation to provide better functionality, flexibility or cost savings.
You will also be expected to carry out the following day to day activities:
* Update and maintain technical documentation.
* Respond to incident reports, ensuring relevant prioritisation and detail to allow for effective investigation.
* Work with well-understood technology and identify appropriate patterns.
* Build and test simple interfaces between systems, or work on more complex integration as part of a wider team.
Working Pattern
Due to the business requirements of this role, it is only available on a full-time basis.
Travel
Some travel to other Home Office sites will occasionally be required.
Person specification
Essential Criteria
You'll have a demonstrable passion for Infrastructure Engineering, with the following skills or some experience in:
* Core technical concepts related to your role and ability to build solutions.
* Maintaining focus on the whole life cycle of service delivery; from design, development, and delivery through to operation.
* Dissecting a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing problem resolution.
* Presenting verbal and written information clearly and accurately in language which meets the needs of the user and can adapt to stakeholders' reactions with flexibility.
* Building strong partnerships with diverse teams across multiple locations and technologies.
* Experience in one or more of the following: Windows servers, Linux servers, Active Directory, Entra ID, AADC, DNS, DHCP, Certificate Authority, scripting languages (Shell, Bash, PowerShell, Python), Microsoft SQL databases, Microsoft System Center.
* Experience in one or more of the following: cloud infrastructure technologies (AWS, Azure), Infrastructure as Code, Identity and Access Management, immutable infrastructure, automation and serverless compute, Desktop as a Service.
