Overview
We are looking for a dynamic and motivated nurse to join the Gynaecology nursing team at Worcestershire Royal Hospital as a Sister/Charge Nurse. The role will be based across the Emergency Gynaecology Assessment Unit (EGAU) and Gynaecology Inpatient Unit (GIU), full or part time hours, at Band 6 level. This position has day-to-day responsibility for leading and supporting a team of skilled nurses, ensuring provision of compassionate and clinically excellent care for patients accessing our services. The EGAU is a 24/7 service and works closely with the Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit; GIU is the setting for emergency and elective gynaecological surgery. The Sister and wider nursing team work by shift allocation across the two areas.
The successful candidate will have an interest in continuous quality improvement of care including the patient experience. They will have at least 2 years of experience working in Gynaecology or a related field and will report to the Ward Manager.

Main duties and responsibilities
* Maintain a high standard of nursing care at all times through effective management of staff and resources and delegation of patient care to appropriately skilled nurses.
* Provide effective leadership, act as a good role model, and liaise with the multi-disciplinary team to coordinate all aspects of care for the patient and family.
* Supervise junior staff and teach qualified and unqualified staff as needed.
* Encourage a culture of reporting accidents/incidents/near misses via Datix for quality improvement; respond to safeguarding concerns and support other nursing staff appropriately.
* Lead the development of knowledge, ideas and practice for quality improvement and ensure nursing procedures align with Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust policies.

Job Description and Responsibilities

* Risk and Safety: Handle manual handling; exposure to body fluids and chemicals; may involve VDU work; Occupational Health risk assessment and DBS clearance required
Job Purpose
To maintain a high standard of nursing care through effective management of staff and resources, and to provide advice and support within the specialty. To provide leadership, liaise with the multidisciplinary team, and coordinate all aspects of patient care in the best interests of the patient and family. To supervise staff and facilitate training as appropriate; to work with the ward/department lead in the absence of that person.
Key Duties
* Professional/Clinical Leadership: assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care; ensure patient safety; delegate appropriately; lead in team nursing and the development of nursing responsibilities.
* Staff Development: supervise and teach staff; mentor junior staff; participate in student nurse supervision and teaching programmes; maintain up-to-date mandatory training.
* Clinical Governance: promote best practice in health and safety, contribute to quality improvement, ensure adherence to Trust policies, participate in clinical audits.
* Management: communicate effectively with ward/department staff and multidisciplinary teams; manage ward/department in the absence of senior leadership; organise duty rotas; ensure 24-hour service and stock control; maintain records and comply with policies; support clinical governance and NICE guidelines.
* Professional and Personnel: maintain professional registration; participate in CPD, research where appropriate; participate in staff recruitment, induction and appraisal; address performance and personnel matters as required.
Essential Qualifications, Experience and Skills
* Qualifications: First level NMC Registered Nurse; evidence of continuing professional development
* Experience: Minimum two years experience at Band 5 within gynaecology or related field; experience working independently, prioritising workload, and working within a multidisciplinary team; experience in shift management; teaching and assessing
* Skills: Up-to-date knowledge of NHS/professional issues including the NMC Code of Conduct; good interpersonal and communication skills; knowledge of women’s health issues; leadership and teaching abilities; infection control and clinical governance awareness; computer literacy; commitment to equality, diversity and rights
Desirable Qualifications and Skills
* Ward/department based teaching; clinical audit activity; risk assessment reporting; involvement in staff appraisals and professional development plans
* Leadership studies/qualification; practice supervisor and assessor; involvement in clinical supervision
Personal Qualities
* Compassionate and empathetic; demonstrates initiative; assertive; enthusiastic, cheerful and dynamic

Other Requirements
* Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks as required; enhanced DBS for posts with children or vulnerable adults
